[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 1, 2021 (December 28 – January 03) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 1, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 1)

All signs pointed towards a big week to kick off 2021, and the latest data from Famitsu shows that sales were indeed quite strong.

Once again, Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! was #1 of sales with nearly 200 000 units sold (190 247 units to be precise). That’s -29% compared to Christmas week, which was pretty big for the game. It’s alreayd sold 1 423 450 units at retail alone, and the 1.5 million units milestone is for next week!

Highlights this week include:

  • 03./03. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 83.853 / 3.541.036 (+23%). It’s now sold over 3.5 millions units at retail alone, and there’s little doubt it will reach 4 million units before the year is over;
  • 05./06. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 54.865 / 4.068.039 (+3%). It reached the 4 millions units during Christmas week, and it’s not done selling;
  • 08./05. [NSW] Pikmin 3 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 36.350 / 499.156 (-34%). It came pretty close to the 500 000 units milestone. It has the potential to sell over 1 million units, especially if you factor in digital sales;
  • 09./09. [NSW] Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Nintendo) – 32.993 / 525.613 (-11%). It’s now sold over 500 000 units milestone, and just like Pikmin 3 Deluxe, it should have no problem selling over 1 million units with digital included.

This week, the usual evergreen titles enjoyed strong sales. Some of them (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Ring Fit Adventure, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Super Mario Party) even saw their sales increase. Week 1 usually sees an increase in sales following the lull between Christmas Day and New Year’s, but this year, Week 52 was the biggest due to Christmas Day ending up on a Friday.

As expected, the Nintendo Switch kicked off 2021 the same way it bid farewell to 2020: in top form. Sales increased even further than during Christmas week, with no less than 312 121 units sold. In comparison, the Nintendo Switch sold “only” 284 827 units during the same week last year.

Thanks to this strong start, 2021 sales are already ahead of 2020 sales. Due to shortages during Q1 2020 (due to Covid-19 messing up with console production at Chinese factories), it’s more than likely that the Nintendo Switch will end up selling more units during Q1 2021. Even if sales do end up dropping Year on Year, said drop should be somewhat limited as demand for the console remain strong (even if shortages are finally a thing of the past).

LTD sales for the Nintendo Switch now stand at 17 652 495 units. It should reach the 18 million units milestone in early February at the latest.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are still as anemic with 714 units sold (up from 658 units last week, but down from 4 030 units during the same week last year). LTD sales now stand at 24 558 964 units.
