Japan: more sales data for Week 7 2019 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 7)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 507 000 units, which is 141.90% of Week 6 sales. The big increase is due to the latest releases, and is centered around the PlayStation 4 (203.57% of Week 6 sales) and the PlayStation Vita (334.24% of Week 6 sales).

However, the new releases didn’t have much of an impact on Hardware sales, which only slightly increased this week to 92 000 units (105.99% of Week 6 sales). What’s more, that increase is pretty much exclusively due to the Nintendo Switch!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 8)

Today, we have the Day-1 sell-through for a couple of Nintendo Switch games:

  • [NSW] Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy # <ADV> (Capcom) (¥3.300) – 20%. Low debut, but this was expected (this is the 5th release of the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney trilogy on Nintendo platforms after all);
  • [NSW] Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match DX # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) (¥7.600) – 40%. Average debut, but retailers shouldn’t have too much trouble selling the remaining units.

Dengeki (Week 7)

Dengeki report that Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi With Power-Up Kit sold about 14 000 units on the two platforms it was released on.

During the holiday season and New Year, the Nintendo Switch largely dominated sales in the Japanese market. But things began to change in January, starting with the release of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown during Week 3: this was the start of 5 weeks in a row with a PlayStation 4 title topping the charts.

Looking at market shares, the PlayStation 4 started putting up a fight with the release of Ace Combat 7:

  • Week 3: 48.5%
  • Week 4 (with the release of Kingdom Hearts III): 79.9%
  • Week 5: 52.4%
  • Week 6: 39.6%
  • Week 7: 56.8%

There was only one week it didn’t have a bigger market share than the Nintendo Switch: during Week 6.

As of the end of this week, the Software market shares for the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4 during the currently Fiscal Year is 53.7% and 34.6% respectively.
