Japan: more sales data for Week 42 2018, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!

Media Create (Week 42)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 353 000 units, which is 66.50% of Week 41 sales. None of the new releases managed to sell at least 30 000 units, and as such, it’s no wonder the ratio of new games in total Software sales dropped from 45.30% to 15.68%.

Media Create: Day-1 sell-through ratio (Week 43)

This week, we have the Day-1 sell-through ratio for a few Nintendo Switch games:

  • [PS4] [NSW] Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection (Capcom) – 30%. Average debut, nothing to write home about;
  • [NSW] Beyblade Burst: Battle Zero (FuRyu) – 10%. Extremely poor debut, but on par for the course for a licenced game from FuRyu, sadly…
  • [NSW] Yomawari: The Long Night Collection (Nippon Ichi Software) – 20%. Mediocre debut, but that seems to be pretty much in line with previous late releases from Nippon Ichi Software.

Dengeki (Week 42)

Dengeki report that Super Mario Party sold about 35 000 units during Week 42, which brings the total since launch to 243 000 units. So far, it’s outselling the previous entry by a wide margin: after the same amount of weeks, Mario Party 10 had only sold 91 000 units… Needless to say, the gap is only going to widen from now on, especially with the end of year holiday season on the horizon.

As for Dark Souls Remastered, it sold about 14 000 units during its first week on the market.

This week again, Dengeki provide some data for the first half of the current Fiscal Year. Previously, they often wrote about the gap in sales between popular games and less popular games. And there’s some (sort of) good news: that gap was actually smaller during the first 6 months of the current Fiscal Year.

Here’s some data:

  • Games that sold between 200 000 units and 500 000 units = 10 (5 during the same period last year)
  • Games that sold between 100 000 units and 200 000 units = 14 (8 during the same period last year)
  • Games that sold less than 10 000 units = 340 (347 during the same period last year)

As you can see for yourself, there are more successful games so far this year, and the situation does seem to be improving overall with the gap between successful games and less successful games becoming smaller. Unfortunately, it’s not that much of an improvement, because this is only due to the lack of major titles. Naturally, things will change dramatically during the second half of the current Fiscal Year, what with the release of several major games such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (among others).

As for the Nintendo Switch specifically, Nintendo’s ratio in total Software sales finally went down, from 80% to 56%. Of course, it’s not really due to Nintendo games performing poorly, but instead third-party publishers finally waking up and releasing attractive games. Dengeki mention a few of them: Minecraft, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun, and Octopath Traveler (which sold out at launch).

Nintendo, as the platformer holder, is pulling the Nintendo Switch market so far, but popular third-party games are finally arriving. If this goes on, and more and more such games are released alongside the first-party offerings from Nitnendo, then the Nintendo Switch market as a whole is only going to rise.

Next, here’s Software sales for each platform:
