Japan: more sales data for Week 15 2018, The Snack World: Trejarers Gold, FY 2017 (Media Create, Dengeki)

More sales data from Japan, with the latest reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 15)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 15, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 313 000 units, which is 97.49% of Week 14 sales: another decrease. Hardware sales are also down, to 59 000 units (87.79% of Week 14 sales).

This was an even worse week than the previous one, which already was the worst week so far this year, with sluggish sales in both Software and Hardware.

Three games came out during Week 15, and sold 62 000 units combined, with The Snack World: Trejarers Gold on Nintendo Switch accounting for over half that number (36 000 units). Unfortunately, those were not enough to compensate for the drop in sales for previously released games (- 69 000 units).

Day-1 sell-through (Media Create)

This week, we have the Day-1 sell-through for a few Nintendo Switch games (nothing out of the ordinary this time):

  • [NSW] Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap (Pikii) – 20%;
  • [NSW] Portal Knights (Spike Chunsoft) – 10%. Poor debut.

Dengeki (Week 15, Fiscal Year 2017)

Dengeki report slightly lower sales for The Snack World: Trejarers Gold, with 34 000 units. The sell-through ratio is pretty much the same: about 65%. The original game on Nintendo 3DS sold over 270 000 units, so that’s over 200 000 potential users Level-5 could bring to the Nintendo Switch.

Also, this week, Dengeki share some more data about Fiscal Year 2017 (that ended on March 31st 2018). Nintendo was once again the most successful publisher, with no less than 3 million-sellers: Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It’s the 15th year in a row that the company is the #1 publisher in Japan!

Thanks to the success of the Nintendo Switch, the company’s market share rose by more than 10% this year, from 17.5% to 30.9%. In other words, 1/3 of total Software sales during the past Fiscal Year are attributed to Nintendo.

Square-Enix is ranked #2, thanks to the success of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, that sold over 3 million units. Its market share went up from 11.2% to 14.7%. As for Capcom, it jumped from #6 to #3 thanks to Monster Hunter World. Unfortunately, Level-5 went down from #5 (8.7% market share) to #7 (3.9% market share). Finally, Konami also dropped, from #8 (3.1% maket share) to #10 (1.6% market share).

While the positions are not quite the same, the companies in the Top 10 are pretty much the same ones as during the previous Fiscal Year. Also, the market is now made of less publishers than before: their number went from 61 to 51. What’s more, the Top 10 most successful publishers account for no less than 87.1% of total Software sales, with the Top 3 companies taking 55.5% of sales for themselves.

It’s something Dengeki already pointed out in their report last week: the sales gap just keeps on widening. This is true not just for games themselves, but also publishers: the most successful one keeps getting more successful, while the less successful ones keeps selling less and less games.
