Japan: more sales data for Week 11 2018, Kirby Star Allies, Switch, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 11)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 11, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 591 000 units, which is 137.73% of Week 10 sales: an increase quite obviously due to the one and only Kirby and Kirby Star Allies.

As a result, sales of new releases more than doubled compared to the previous week. Said new releases account for 56.07% of total Software sales during Week 11, which is 20% more than during Week 10.

Media Create point out that Kirby Star Allies had a better debut than its predecessors on Nintendo 3DS, Kirby: Robobot Planet. Here’s their sales data, to compare:

  • Kirby: Planet Robobot – 145 000 units at launch, and 634 000 units LTD
  • Kirby Triple Deluxe: 214 000 units at launch, and 836 000 units LTD

With 220 000 units sold in just three days, Kirby Star Allies is off to an even better start than its predecessors, which sold pretty well. With the announcement of free additional content during the Nintendo Direct (the week prior to launch), the game got some good exposure, which most likely helped with initial sales.

Since total sales for the previous two games are about 4 times higher than launch sales, Media Create naturally expect Kirby Star Allies to keep selling on the long term. Could it reach 1 million units (something the series hasn’t been able to achieve since the Nintendo DS era)? We will have to wait a few months to find out!

Dengeki (Week 11)

Dengeki start by pointing out that Kirby Star Allies is the first mainline Kirby game to be released on a home console since Kirby’s Return to Dream Land / Kirby’s Adventure Wii on Wii. It had no trouble outselling that game and Kirby Planet Roboot:

  • Kirby’s Return to Dream Land / Kirby’s Adventure Wii on Wii – 135 500 units at launch, 795 000 units LTD;
  • Kirby: Planet Robobot – 120 000 units at launch, 573 000 units LTD.

Since pretty much all mainline Kirby games have kept selling on the long run, reaching 500 000 units, they naturally expect Kirby Star Allies to do the same.

Dengeki also report that sales for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions of Attack on Titan 2 are much closer than reported by Media Create (which seem to have undertrack this particular version, for some reason): about 28 000 units for the former, and 29 000 units for the latter.

They also point out that it’s a sharp drop for the series, as the first game sold over 150 000 units at launch (and 330 000 units LTD). Combined, the 3 versions of Attack on Titan 2 have only sold about 72 000 units.

Finally, Dengeki report that Winning Post 8 2018 sold about 12 000 units across all platforms.

But that’s not all. Dengeki also share data for the first year of the Nintendo Switch (to be more precise, the first 55 weeks, so a little over a year). The console has sold over 3.93 million units, with 9.48 million units for Software (across 70 games, not counting digital-only games and digital sales in general). The attach rate is 2.4, which is effectively higher if you factor in digital sales.

Here’s how previous Nintendo consoles fared during a similar timeframe:

  • Wii: 4.24 million units for Hardware, and 12.25 million units for Software (2.9 attach rate)
  • Wii U: 1.42 million units for Hardware, and 3.25 million units for Hardware (2.3 attach rate)

The Nintendo Switch didn’t quite manage to do as well as the Wii (due to shortages, but also poor third-party support overall), but it massively outsold the Wii U.

It will certainly be interesting to see how much the Nintendo Switch can grow during its second year, especially with the announcement of such as major killer app as Super Smash Bros.!
