The first week of the year is always pretty important for the Japanese market, and it looks like this year, the majority of people who received otoshidama on the Nintendo Switch and its games.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe dominated sales during the last week of the year, and it was a different story during New Year. Splatoon 2 enjoyed a greater boost Week on Week and stole the crown of best-selling game of the week from Super Mario Odyssey by only 4 000 units.

It sold 130 901 units this week (+63%), which brings the total to 1 882 997 units since launch. As expected, Splatoon 2 is bound to become the very first multi-million-seller on Nintendo Switch pretty soon, sometime in January actually.

And 2 million units is a milestone Super Mario Odyssey is also going to reach, though it’s going to take quite a bit longer than for Splatoon 2: not only has it sold “only” 1 450 747 units so far, but it’s also expected to have a worse drop in sales once the New Year effect is gone (basically, from Week 2 onwards). It sold 126 467 units this week (+60%).

Of course, Super Mario Odyssey is guaranteed to keep selling at a steady pace throughout 2018, and it should have no trouble outselling Super Mario 3D Land (the best-selling 3D Mario game).

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it missed the 100 000 units/week threshold by less than 2 000 units: it sold 98 731 units (+11%) during the first week of the year. While significantly less popular than Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey, it still enjoyed really strong sales, bringing the total to over 1 200 000 units since launch.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is another game that benefited from the New Year boost, with 76 258 units sold this week. The increase isn’t as big as for Nintendo games on Nintendo Switch (it’s “only” +30%), but it’s still significant enough. Unfortunately, sales should drop harshly from Week 2 onwards. So far, 2 080 135 units have been sold (retail + Dual-Pack counted as 2 units + Downloads Cards).

Quite interestingly, Mario Party: The Top 100 actually sold more during its 2nd week than during launch week, which is something that only happens pretty rarely. To be more precise, it sold 64 885 units (+40%), which brings the total since launch to 111 073 units.

It looks like it should be able to sell more than 200 000 units, and therefore not end up as the worst-selling Mario Party game (that’s Mario Party: Star Rush, also on Nintendo 3DS, with over 188 000 units sold). It will need to sell on the long run for that, though!

Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 also got a nice little boost for New Year (+52%), and ended up selling almost 50 000 units (49 252 units to be precise). It should be able to reach 500 000 units in the next few months, though it’s not clear yet whether it will manage to sell steadily like the original did a couple of years ago.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild started 2018 the same way it ended 2017… with strong sales! During Week 1, it sold no less than 38 416 units (that’s +37% Week on Week), and over 726 460 units since launch… on Nintendo Switch alone. There really isn’t any doubt left that the game will sell at least 1 million units, and it looks like it will not even need the Wii U version for that!

If you were worried about ARMS, those worries were unfounded: it reached 300 000 units this week (307 579 units), thanks to strong New Year sales (22 516 units this week, +70% Week on Week). While it’s been missing from the Top 20 Software pretty often, it’s kept selling steadily since launch, and it looks like it should be able to reach 500 000 units when all is said and done.

However, for that to happen, it will have to keep selling steadily throughout 2018. Right now, it’s not clear whether this is going to happen or not, especially with Nintendo not releasing any more content updates for the game (though there’s still semi-regular events: the Party Crash).

And don’t forget about 1-2-Switch: it also looks poised to sell at least 500 000 units LTD. Right now, it’s standing at 316 471 units, with 20 183 units sold during Week 1 (that’s +10% compared to Week 52). If the game keeps selling on the long run, then 500 000 units definitely will not be a pipe-dream.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

  • 11./14. [3DS] Kirby Battle Royale (Nintendo) – 17.112 / 138.406 <80-100%> (+84%). Strong New Year sales for Kirby, which could reach 200 000 units LTD if it keeps selling at a steady pace on the long run;
  • 12./12. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 15.380 / 191.761 <80-100%> (+41%). It should be able to reach 200 000 units during Week 2 (Week 3 at the latest);
  • 13./16. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 12.296 / 331.907 <80-100%> (+55%). It looks like this one is bound to keep selling until the Nintendo Switch entry is out in the wild!
  • 15./20. [3DS] Style Savvy: Styling Star (Nintendo) – 10.526 / 119.559 <60-80%> (+77%). This one should be able to sell at least 150 000 units LTD. It’s already guaranteed not to be the worst-selling game in the series (but it definitely will if you only take into account brand new games);
  • 16./19. [NSW] Snipperclips Plus: Cut it Out, Together! (Nintendo) – 9.706 / 43.496 <80-100%> (+49%). After strong sales on the Nintendo eShop, Snipperclips is also enjoying strong sales at retail;
  • 17./22. [NSW] Sumikko Gurashi: Sumikko Park e Youkoso (Nippon Columbia) – 9.410 / 43.330 <60-80%> (+82%). It will be interesting to see if this one keeps selling on the long run, like the Nintendo 3DS entry did. So far so good, at least!
  • 18./13. [NSW] Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Nintendo) – 9.238 / 158.628 <80-100%> (-6%). So far, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is enjoying steady sales, and it will e interesting to see how it sells throughout 2018 (what with the various DLC pack to sustain sales in the long run… by preventing used sales);
  • 19./18. [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) – 9.064 / 99.903 <80-100%> (+35%). 100 000 units is a great result for a late port like this one, especially as it’s clearly not done selling!
  • 20./00. [NSW] Super Bomberman R (Konami) – 8.856 / 129.036. Who said that Bomberman was dead?

This week saw a major increase in sales for the Nintendo Switch, which sold over 150 000 units (159 636 units to be precise). As expected, sales did go up during New Year, and Nintendo was prepared for it… though unfortunately, demand wasn’t quite met once again. But the company did ship a significant amount of consoles in order to take advantage of young Japanese players looking to spend their otoshidama on some games!

January is expected to be a calm month for the Nintendo Switch in Japan, for several reasons. First of all, January is typically a quiet period for video game sales (though it’s not the worst, far from it), and secondly, there isn’t major releases this month: just Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle on January 18th.

Of course, it’s unlikely Nintendo Switch shipments (and therefore sales) are going to drop below a certain threshold, because demand remains strong to this very day. Besides, the company definitely would not want to cut into the Nintendo Switch momentum… the console is only getting started, after all.

Nintendo 3DS sales also increased during Week 1, but they’re only half of what they were during the same week last year. Not surprising considering the handheld is about to enter its 8th year on the market, but that certainly makes one wonder how it’s going to fare throughout 2018, especially as the Nintendo Switch eats more and more into its family and kids audience…

Finally, the Wii U sold 140 units this week. For some reason, it looks like Famitsu is going to keep tracking it, despite it being discontinued.
