[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 9, 2019 (February 25th – March 03) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Media Create (and Famitsu), covering Week 9, 2019 in Japan.

This week, there’s quite a few entries in the Top 20 provided by Media Create, including several Nintendo Switch titles. Unfortunately, they all failed to make a strong impression, as the best-selling one barely managed to sell 10 000 units…

That game is Zoids Wild: King of Blast, which sold 10 030 units during launch week. That’s actually pretty good by series standards, though making a direct comparison is a bit hard: the last entry was released back in 2007, after all… Still, this is a solid debut (albeit unimpressive: 10 000 units is nothing to write home about for most games/series), and if it keeps selling steadily, then no doubt Takara-Tomy will be pretty satisfied by those sales.

The Darius Cozmic Collection was only available at retail, which is most likely why its sales are better than expected for such a collection (targeting a limited audience). No doubt Taito is pretty satisfied with the 9 495 units sold during the first few days. Unfortunately, it’s quite likely sales will drop like a rock next week, as the audience for this kind of collection usually tends to buy during the first few days.

Finally, Doraemon: Nobita no Getsumen Tansaki debuted at 3 370 units sold, which is really poor even by FuRyu standards. In fact, this is the worst debut for the series since the only entry on Wii. It looks like the Nintendo Switch audience isn’t really receptive to FuRyu’s low-budget licenced games, even less than on Nintendo 3DS (where they already didn’t sell a lot).

The announcement of Pokémon Sword and Shield had a noticeable impact on Hardware sales, which in turn translated into a bump for (almost) all the evergreen titles in the Top 20 from Media Create. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate saw its sales increase by 14%, to 25 617 units. This brings total sales to 2 909 033 units LTD, which means they could very well reach 3 million units at retail alone before the end of the month (however, April is the safest bet at this point).

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe saw a small bump (+5%), with 24 436 units sold, most likely because it’s a more recent game. It should pass the 500 000 units milestone next week, and it will keep selling after that. It remains to be seen what kind of impact Super Mario Maker 2 is going to have on this game!

As expected, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee did see its sales increase thanks to the announcement of Pokémon Sword and Shield, with +16% in a week (12 864 units sold). Of course, that’s not going to last very long, and it’s unlikely the 2 million units milestone will be reached.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw one of the biggest increases this week, with 12 369 units sold (+33%). This comes as no big surprise, as this game has been selling steadily during the past couple of years, and it’s considered a must-have by a significant amount of new Nintendo Switch owners. It’s now sold over 2 154 696 units at retail alone, and with each passing week, the likelihood of the game reaching the 3 million units milestone increases.

Finally, Super Mario Party keep selling merrily, with 9 900 units this week (+13%). While it’s not clear whether it will eventually reach 2 million units at retail alone, total sales are definitely going to be closer to 2 millions than 1 million.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create:

• 12./15. [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo) – 8.986 / 2.947.577 (+51%). Biggest increase this week, which shows Splatoon 2 is still going strong;
• 14./11. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 8.638 / 624.521 (+3%). Strong and steady sales;
• 15./12. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 7.694 / 1.307.507 (-1%). It’s now been 2 years since the game launched, and it hasn’t left the Top 20 from Media Create even once!

As mentioned above, the Nintendo Switch saw a significant increase in sales this week. They jumped to over 68 000 units, which is roughly 15 000 units more than during the previous week. It looks like the announcement of Pokémon Sword and Shield convinced many a player to finally get a Nintendo Switch, though payday at the end of the month definitely helped a bit.

In comparison, the Nintendo Switch only sold 45 083 units during the same week, last year. Despite a lackluster line-up in Q1, sales still remain far ahead of 2018 sales after the same amount of weeks, and it really doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon.

By Week 9, the console had sold 490 921 units in 2018. This year, total sales for the year have already topped 720 000 units. If sales remain that strong, then they could very well reach 1 million units by the end of this quarter (March 31st)… though early April is more likely. As for LTD sales, they’re getting closer and closer to the 8 million units milestone. In fact, the 7.5 million units milestone was reached this very week.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it saw an unexpected increase with 7 521 units sold (roughly 3 000 units more than during Week 8). Of course, that increase is temporary, and the handheld will be back to more “normal” sales next week. Quite interestingly, the gap with last year’s sales is the smallest it’s been in a long while, as the Nintendo 3DS only sold about 11 000 units during the same week last year.
