[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 8, 2019 (February 18th – February 24th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Media Create (and Famitsu), covering Week 8, 2019 in Japan.

NB: due to a really tight schedule this week, we’re only providing comments about the new releases.

Media Create

This week, there’s quite a few entries in the Top 20 from Media Create, but nothing too exciting on the Nintendo Switch front.

The best-selling new entry on Nintendo Switch is Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match DX, which is off to a decent start with 7 6651 units sold. This is on par for the course for a late port of a niche game: nothing mindblowing, but not a complete disaster either.

In comparison, the PlayStation 4 version sold about 40 000 units at launch, almost a year ago. Unfortunately, unlike the Dragon Ball games, Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match DX is not going to sell in the long run: in fact, it should be gone from the Top 20 as early as next week.

As for the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, it sold over 8 100 units on the two platforms it was released on. The Nintendo Switch version was slightly more popular, with 4 419 units sold, and nothing should change with total sales (since Nintendo Switch games tend to sell better in the long run).

Those are pretty low sales, but they’re hardly a surprise for anyone, let alone Capcom. Not the only has the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney trilogy already been released on many different platforms (GameBoy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, mobile, PC, etc.), but it’s not even the first release of the Trilogy… it’s actually the third one! The second one, on Nintendo 3DS, sold about 26 000 units at launch.

Looking at those sales, it’s pretty clear this umpteenth re-release didn’t really attract many new players (if at all). Granted, it did sell nearly 4 000 units on PlayStation 4, but not only is that a low number, it’s actually quite likely many of those 4 000 people had already played the games before (it’s not like PlayStation 4 owners have never touched a non-Sony platform before).

Unfortunately, the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is unlikely to sell significant amounts in the long run (a few hundreds on a weekly basis, at most).

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped significantly, but they remain at an unusually high level despite the complete lack of notable releases. Over 53 000 units were sold this week, which is nearly 14 000 units more than last year during the same week.

It looks like total 2019 sales are going to stay well ahead of 2018 sales for quite a while: in fact, the gap between the two years keep growing week after week. The Nintendo Switch line-up for the next few weeks is certainly packed with releases, which should help sustain sales, but there’s nothing to really boost sales in a significant manner. The next first-party release is Yoshi’s Crafted World on March 29th, in over a month.

The Nintendo Switch is closing on total PlayStation 4 sales (there’s now less than 500 000 units between LTD sales of both consoles), but it’s going to take a couple of months before Nintendo’s console overtake it.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales remain perfectly flat with 4 553 units sold (barely 201 units less than during the previous week).
