Japan – Media Create sales for Week 33, 2015 (August 10 – 16) [Top 50]
With both the Obon and the school holidays, Week 33 was a pretty good week for Nintendo in Japan.
There’s no new entry in the Top 20, but already released titles shone brightly enough on their own to compensate. Unsurprisingly, the chart is filled with Nintendo 3DS titles (12 in total), led by Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and its 140 235 units sold (-23%): it should definitely reach 1 million units sold at retail by late August/early September.
With the exception of Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken (-1%), all Nintendo 3DS and Wii U games in the chart saw their sales rising: Yo-kai Watch Busters (+18%), Splatoon (+16%), Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ (+45%), Mario Kart 8 (+35%), Fire Emblem Fates (+5%), Animal Crossing: New Leaf (+13%), Yoshi’s Woolly World (+14%), Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire (+19%) and even Super Run for Money (+38%).
There’s also some Nintendo 3DS titles making a come-back during Week 33 (theywill most likely be gone completely from the chart in Week 34), such as Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Girls Mode 3: KiraKira Code and more. All these games are family-friendly games, the very kind of games which always sell pretty well during holidays such as this one!
Hardware-wise, Obon and the holidays had a limited impact on the Nintendo 3DS, which “only” sold 42 248 units this week (vs. 51 794 in 2014). Since the handheld is already in its 5th year on the market, it’s not surprising that sales wouldn’t catch up with those from 2014, even during a holiday week.
But the most interesting thing this week, for the Nintendo 3DS, is that sales have finally crossed the 19 million mark in Japan. Unless they suddenly drop off a cliff during the next 4 four months, total sales are basically guaranteed to reach 20 million before the end of the year. While this is nothing compared to the monster that was the Nintendo DS, it’s definitely a great result in the current market!
As for the Wii U, sales may be up compared to last week (16 567 units sold), they’re down compared to the same week in 2014 (18 161). Unfortunately, total sales for 2014 are quickly “catching up” with the total for this year: 364 732 (2015) vs 364 481 (2014). While Super Mario Maker will definitely help in September, sales are bound to be down Year on Year in the end.
Next week, sales are expected to drop sharply, both for Software and Hardware. For the Wii U in particular, the upcoming Super Mario Maker bundle might make some players reluctant to buy the console right now.
