[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 32, 2018 (August 6th – August 12th) [Top 50]

With Obon just around the corner, there’s been quite a lot of new releases (what with publishers trying to take advantage of the holiday week). This week, there’s 5 new entries in the Top 20 from Media Create, though only two of them are on Nintendo platforms. Unfortunately, they did not really set the charts on fire…

The best-selling one is Okami HD, which sold 14 089 units at launch: a rather decent performance (for a late remaster of game already available on 3 other platforms, that is), albeit an unimpressive one. According to Famitsu, the PlayStation 4 version sold about 14 000 units at launch, which is more or less the same as the Nintendo Switch version: not too shabby for a late release. Unfortunately, it’s highly unlikely the game will sell all that much in the upcoming weeks: in fact, it will most likely drop from the Top 20 as early as next week.

The second release is Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire’s Conspiracy DX, which sold rather poorly: only 9 704 units. In comparison, the Nintendo 3DS version sold 70 641 units at launch, last year (according to Famitsu data). Considering this version is sold at full price (over 6 000 Yen), when the Nintendo 3DS and the mobile versions are available for much cheaper, it’s no wonder it didn’t fly off the shelves. The lack of any meaningful additional content is another reason this Nintendo Switch version didn’t do so hot.

While new releases didn’t sell all that much, the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch are still going as strong as ever. Let’s take a look at Splatoon 2 to begin with: its sales increased slightly this week, to 21 630 units (+3%). They’re expecting to increase even further next week, with Obon. The game has already sold over 2.5 million units, and is well on its way to 3 million units.

Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun isn’t an evergreen title (yet!), yet it’s enjoying strong sales. Said sales remained flat this week, with 21 020 units sold (-3%). Just like Splatoon 2, they’re expected to go up next week, with Obon. Since launch, the game has already sold over 140 000 units, and should reach 200 000 units before the end of the month. Depending on how much it sells during non-holiday months (September to November), it could end up selling over 500 000 units LTD.

As for WarioWare Gold, it had a recent decent second week drop, with 19 183 units sold (-38%). It’s now sold over 50 000 units since launch, and it should be well over 100 000 units by the end of the month. Depending on the sales trajectory from September onwards, and whether or not the game gets a boost during the holiday season in December, it could end up selling over 200 000 units LTD.

With the Summer holidays, the various evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch saw a significant boost in sales. That’s the case of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Minecraft, that both saw their sales increase by 13%. In fact, they actually sold more or less the same amount of units: 17 795 for the former (1 688 546 units since launch), and 17 003 units for the latter (186 221 units since launch).

Mario Tennis Aces isn’t far behind, with 16 456 units sold (+6%). It did miss the 300 000 units threshold by a hair (or rather, roughly 3 000 units!), which means it will hit it next week (with or without Obon). Based on the current sales trajectory, it definitely would not be farfetched to expect this one to hit 500 000 units by the end of the year.

Finally, Pro Yakyuu Famista Evolution saw a rather big drop in sales during its second week: -63%, with 15 671 units sold. That being sales, they should be flat (or at least slightly down) next week, with Obon, brining it closer to the 100 000 units threshold. Sales during the post-Summer holidays months will tell us whether this one has a chance to reach 200 000 units LTD or not.

Next, let’s take a look at how games are faring in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create:

• 12./06. [NSW] Octopath Traveler (Square Enix) – 11.390 / 175.625 (-38%). Shortages are still raging, but Square-Enix managed to ship enough copies for sales to drop only by 36%;
• 13./15. [NSW] Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Nintendo) – 10.875 / 90.123 (+38%). Noticeable boost in sales thanks to the Summer holidays (the perfect time for adventure!). It should reach 100 000 units next week;
• 14./01. [3DS] Etrian Odyssey X (Atlus) – 9.914 / 81.860 (-86%). Usual second week drop coupled with shortages was bound to end with sharp drop in sales. It shouldn’t be enough to prevent the game from reaching 100 000 units LTD;
• 16./14. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 8.300 / 1.074.639 (+5%). Despite reaching 1 million units several weeks ago, this one isn’t nearly done selling: it’s really aiming at that best-selling The Legend of Zelda game spot in Japan!
• 17./16. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies (Nintendo) – 7.657 / 587.496 (+9%). Getting closer and closer to the 600 000 units milestone, that should be reached in a couple of weeks;
• 18./17. [3DS] Pokémon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 6.451 / 1.695.264 (+4%). Game isn’t done selling, and will in fact reach 1.7 million units at retail (stand-alone version only) next week!
• 20./18. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) {2017.10.27} (¥5.980) – 6.016 / 1.788.814 (+16%). It will most likely drop from the Top 20 once the Summer holidays are over. It will reach 1.8 million units sold at retail within the next couple of weeks.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are surprisingly steady, with about 50 000 units sold… just like last week. The console has been hovering around the 45-50 000 units/week threshold for a while now, and at this rate, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if it also sold about 50 000 units during Obon week. While those sales are definitely a bit underwhelming, it’s certain reassuring to see that interest in the console remains strong and steady despite the lack of major releases like Splatoon 2.

Last year during the same week, the Nintendo Switch sold about 87 000 units: that was during those few weeks when Nintendo shipped large amount of consoles every week (even though that wasn’t nearly enough to meet demand). Unfortunately, it doesn’t look likely that sales this year will get anywhere near last year numbers for another couple of weeks, but things will change once the Summer holidays are over. Granted, sales will drop this year in September, but it will be nothing compared to the intensification of shortages post-Obon in 2017!

Fortunately, 2018 sales should remain ahead of 2017 sales until the end of the year. The console should reach the 5 million units milestone sometime in September or October, depending on how fast sales drop after the Summer holidays.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales did drop this week, but it did manage to stay above the 10 000 units/week threshold… just barely, with 10 910 units. While we can expect an increase for Obon, it’s bound to remain rather limited, since the focus is clearly going to be on the Nintendo Switch. The comparison with last year isn’t really pretty, with 2017 sales being nearly 5 times higher than this year.
