[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 18, 2018 (April 30th – May 6th) [Top 50]

Week 18 was the infamous Golden Week in Japan, which is why so many games in the Top 20 from Media Create saw an increase in sales.
But the real star of the week is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which is off to a great start: it sold 88 421 units during the first 4 days. In comparison, the Wii U version of the game only sold about 35 000 units at launch, which means this Nintendo Switch version sold more than twice better.
According to Media Create, the Wii U version sold over 130 000 units LTD, and of course, the Nintendo Switch one will have no trouble outselling it. In fact, it’s only going to take a couple of weeks for it to do so, which shows yet again just how toxic the Wii U was as a platform. It’s not clear how much it will sell in the end, but there’s no doubt it will have no trouble clearing 200 000 units.
Nintendo Labo saw a bump in sales during the Golden Week, with the Variety Kit getting the biggest bump (but it’s not all that much compared to the other games in The Top 20 from Media Create):
- Variety Kit: 32 244 units sold this week (+24%), and 148 658 units since launch. It should have no trouble selling over 200 000 units LTD;
- Robot Kit: 6 694 units sold this week (+18%), and 41 003 units since launch. It will definitely sell over 50 000 units LTD, and it could eventually crawl to 100 000 units.
You would think that with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze releasing this week, people would have enough of platformers on Nintendo Switch for the time being, but it really doesn’t seem to be the case. Kirby Star Allies saw its sales jump by 75%, to 31 377 units. This brings the total to 482 816 units, which means that it will reach the 500 000 units milestone at retail next week.
Super Mario Odyssey also saw a big increase (+64%), with 11 873 units sold. This brings it a little bit closer to the 2 million units milestone, though it’s going to be a few months until it’s reached (it’s currently sitting at 1 716 639 units).
Splatoon 2 is incredibly popular all year long, so it’s no real surprise it was one of the most popular games during the Golden Week. Media Create reports 29 850 units sold for Week 18 (that’s a 60% increase Week on Week), and 2 297 437 units sold since launch. Sales are definitely going to drop from next week, but it’s not going to drop off the Top 10 from Media Create any time soon.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the game that saw the biggest increase Week on Week, with 23 983 units sold during the Golden Week: that’s +82%! It’s now sold over 1.5 million units since launch (1 521 818 units to be precise), which is an incredible performance for a mere enhanced port. Naturally, it’s only a matter of time until the 2 million units milestone is reached (definitely before the end of the year).
Finally, The Snack World: Trejarers Gold has been selling rather steadily since launch, and it did get a good boost during the Golden Week. According to Media Create, it sold 12 654 units during Week 18 (+21%), and 74 638 units since launch. Sales will no doubt go back down next week, but there’s no doubt the game will manage to sell at least 100 000 units LTD.
Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:
- 11./13. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 11.151 / 980.427 (+42%). In a couple of weeks, it will reach 1 million units sold on Nintendo Switch alone, at retail;
- 13./23. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2017.11.17} (¥4.980) – 6.506 / 1.628.863. Back in the Top 20 thanks to the Golden Week;
- 14./29. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 5.551 / 441.682. Another game that popped back in the Top 20 thanks to the Golden Week. It’s definitely going to reach 500 000 units sold within the next few months;
- 16./31. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) – 4.366 / 403.404. It’s now sold over 400 000 units since launch, and fortunately for us, it happened right during the Golden Week, with its comeback in the Top 20!
- 17./34. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 4.264 / 259.693. It’s most likely dropping from the Top 20 again as early as next, but it looks like it’s still going to keep selling steadily;
- 19./09. [NSW] SD Gundam G Generation: Genesis for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) – 4.192 / 16.168 (-65%). A slightly better second week than usual, but nothing to write home about;
- 20./33. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 3.991 / 405.306. Guess which game is back in the Top 20 from Media Create yet again? This version of the game has already sold over 400 000 units, and it looks like it definitely could reach 500 000 by the end of the year.

Thanks to the Golden Week, Nintendo Switch sales increased noticeably this week: they went from 38 000 to 53 000 units sold. This is a pretty solid performance, albeit a bit disappointing compared to Golden Week periods for previous consoles. Thanks to the lack of shortages, the console did sell more than last year during the same week, at least!
Of course, the real test will be the upcoming weeks. After all, May and June are among the slowest months of the year for video games sales in Japan, and a drop is pretty much inevitable for all platforms: the Nintendo Switch will be no exception. At least, the line-up is quite packed for those two months, which should prevent sales from dropping too low (especially as this time, there will be no shortages to explain the drops).
Sales did increase slightly for the Nintendo 3DS, with 10 785 units sold. That’s a pretty limited drop, but this will hardly surprise anyone as this is in line with sales in 2018 so far. After all, there really isn’t anything that will provide a significant boost in sales: games or holidays will not make much a difference anymore.
