[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 47, 2019 (November 18th – November 24th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 47, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

This week, there’s only one entry in the Top 10 Software provided by Famitsu, and it’s not a Nintendo Switch title unfortunately.

But the recent releases and the usual evergreen titles are still enjoying great popularity, starting with Pokémon Sword and Shield and its solid second week. The game sold 382 540 additional units, which is a 72% drop compared to launch week. That’s a better drop than recent mainline Pokémon games, which is something Nintendo and The Pokémon Company must be pretty be happy about considering there’s also digital sales to take into account.

Total sales at retail now stand at 1 740 084 units, and unless the 3rd week drop is too sharp, it will reach the 2 million units milestone next week (a milestone that was already reached during Week 1 thanks to strong digital sales).

Ring Fit Adventure sold 26 141 units this week, and its sales are flat with -7% compared to Week 46. However, the game is still suffering from shortages, and sales would be much higher if Nintendo were able to meet demand. Unfortunately, it’s not clear when Nintendo will finally ship enough copies to retailers, but even if they don’t during Week 47, it’s guaranteed to hit the 300 000 units milestone as total sales currently stand at 290 081 units.

As for Luigi’s Mansion 3, sales dropped once again, but they remain strong enough for it to hit a new milestone this week: 250 000 units (258 919 units to be precise), thanks to the 23 872 additional units sold (-20%). With the holiday season just around the corner, we can expect sales to start going back up as early as next week.

Next, here’s how the other games in the Top 10 Software from Famitsu fared this week:

  • 07./07. [NSW] Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 (Sega) – 8.826 / 51.582 (-2%). After a really disappointing debut, sales remain quite steady. It’s now sold over 50 000 units, and should have no trouble whatsoever selling over 100 000 units before the end of the year;
  • 08./20. [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo) – 8.576 / 1.154.354 (+165%). This massive increase in sales is due to the re-release of the bundle including two Joy-Cons;
  • 09./09. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 8.512 / 1.011.672 (+11%). It hit the 1 million units milestone last week, but it’s clearly not done selling;
  • 10./12. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 7.360 / 2.533.458 (+12%). A great holiday season on the horizon for this one!

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch are perfectly flat, with 179 992 units (vs. 180 136 units the previous week). That’s quite unexpected, as a week with a major release is pretty much always followed by a significant drop (though sales remain strong), unless it’s right in the middle of a holiday season. Therefore, this is a pretty good week for the Nintendo Switch, and it bodes quite well for the upcoming holiday season.

The console sold nearly 70 000 unis more than last year during the same week (113 341 units), and that’s more or less the amount of units the Nintendo Switch Lite sold. This is yet another proof that it’s greatly contributing to overall Nintendo Switch sales, instead of cannibalising those of the OG model. This is a best case scenario for Nintendo, as the OG model (more expensive) is still selling well.

Thanks to this great week, Nintendo Switch sales for 2019 are now over 1 million units ahead of 2018 sales (3 356 261 vs 2 323 645). And that’s not all: the Nintendo Switch sold 3 534 165 units through the entirety of 2018, which means that 2019 sales nearly passed 2018 sales…. with 5 weeks left in the year. It’s now guaranteed the console will sell well over 4 million units this year, but the real question is how close to 5 million units the console will get before the end of the year?

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it once again came pretty close to 3 digit sales, with 1 073 units (vs. 1 262 units last week, and 8 302 units last year during the same week). Since the beginning of the year, the console has sold 175 464 units (vs. 490 261 units after the same amount of weeks in 2018), which brings total sales to 24 480 428 units.
