[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 26, 2019 (June 24th – June 30th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 26, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

The biggest release of the week is Super Mario Maker 2, which is off to a good start with 196 153 units sold according to Famitsu. In comparison, the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions sold 160 000 and 143 000 units respectively, and so it’s great news for Nintendo that the game has already outsold its predecessors. Those both ended up selling over 1 million units LTD, and there’s little doubt Super Mario Maker 2 will do the same (and before the end of the year).

One thing to keep in mind about Super Mario Maker 2 is that digital sales are going to account for a significant portion of total sales, due to two things:

  • the 3 000 Yen discount now included with all Nintendo Switch consoles
  • the Nintendo Switch Game Voucher

Unfortunately, we will have to wait until the end of the month and the latest financial results from Nintendo before finding out how much Super Mario Maker 2 has sold digitally. Also, Media Create report significantly higher numbers than Famitsu (about 230 000 units), though there’s no clear reasons to explain the discrepancy between the two trackers.

One thing we can say for sure at the moment is that Super Mario Maker 2 is guaranteed to enjoy strong sales during the Summer holidays season, especially with positive word of mouth.

Next, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu is off to a great start with 75 505 units sold. That’s nearly 3 times before than the previous entry on a Nintendo platform (Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu Heroes on Nintendo 3DS, with only 28 000 units sold at launch), which is not much of a surprise since it had a rather poor reception (it did go and sell over 120 000 units LTD).

Unless word of mouth is incredibly bad (which doesn’t seem to be the case), it should enjoy strong sales during the Summer holidays season. It should easily be able to sell over 200 000 units during the first couple of months.

Next, let’s take a look at how the other games in the Top 10 Software from Famitsu are faring:

  • 03./01. [NSW] Yo-kai Watch 4: We Are Looking Up at the Same Sky (Level 5) – 40.376 / 191.097 (-73%) . Decent second week, but nothing more. Summer sales will be key;
  • 05./04. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 10.161 / 3.140.500 (+22%). The increase in Nintendo Switch sales naturally led to an increase in sales for Smash;
  • 07./03. [NSW] Doraemon: Story of Seasons (Bandai Namco Games) – 8.749 / 65.544 (-40%). Sales remain good so far;
  • 08./06. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 8.108 / 2.348.789 (+20%). Just like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it benefited from the increase in Nintendo Switch sales;
  • 09./05. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 7.795 / 830.685 (+10%). It will reach the 850 000 milestone within the next few weeks;
  • 10./08. [NSW] Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (Pokemon Co.) – 7.781 / 1.565.955 (+65%). A rather unexpected boost in sales!

As expected, Nintendo Switch sales got a healthy boost thanks to the release of Super Mario Maker 2 and the 3 000 Yen Nintendo eShop coupon now included with all units sold. The console sold 59 184 units this week, which is more than twice what it sold during Week 25 (29 058 units), and nearly 10 000 units more than last year during the same week (50 678 units).

With the Summer holidays season just around the corner, it’s pretty safe to expect Nintendo Switch sales to remain strong through July and August, though it’s not clear how low they will drop before the holidays truly kick in. At the very least, the line-up for the console is fairly solid, especially with Fire Emblem: Three Houses at the end of the month.

Now that weekly sales are back to Year on Year increases, the gap between 2019 and 2018 YTD sales is increasing again, with 1 483 898 units in 2019 and 1 167 557 units in 2018. The console will reach the 1.5 million units milestone next week (Week 27). Finally, the Nintendo Switch has now sold over 8 373 444 units in Japan alone since launch.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales remain perfectly flat with 2 713 units sold this week, as oposed to 2 362 units the previous week. Last year, the handheld was selling 7 653 units. So far, it has sold 130 145 units this year (331 152 units last year), bringing total sales to 24 435 309 units.
