Japan: Famitsu sales for September 2020 (Software, Hardware, Publishers)

Famitsu have shared their monthly report on video game sales in Japan, this time covering September 2020 (to be more precise, the period going from August 31st to September 27th, so 4 weeks in total).

Animal Crossing: New Horizons could have been the best-selling game in Japan for the 7th month in Japan, if not for Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Ring Fit Adventure. The compilation of 3D Mario games sold 273 939 units during its launch month, which is a fairly solid performance (especially if you take into account digital sales).

Animal Crossing: New Horizons saw a significant drop in sales (from 348 000 units to 125 000 units), in part due to the end of the Summer holiday season, but primarily because Nintendo shipped a lot less Nintendo Switch bundles than in previous months.

Here’s the Top 5 Software for September 2020:

01./00. [NSW] Super Mario 3D All-Stars <Super Mario 64 \ Super Mario Sunshine \ Super Mario Galaxy> <ACT> (Nintendo) {2020.09.18} (¥6.480) – 273.939 / NEW
02./02. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure <HOB> (Nintendo) {2019.10.18} (¥7.980) – 182.158 / 1.602.185 (-15%)
03./01. [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2020.03.20} (¥5.980) – 125.620 / 5.754.082 (-64%)
04./00. [PS4] Marvel’s Avengers <ACT> (Square Enix) {2020.09.04} (¥7.980) – 55.817 / NEW
05./00. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe <RCE> (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} (¥5.980) – 52.367 / 3.184.225

Once again, the Nintendo Switch has the most games in the Top 5 Software, thanks to the strong performance of its evergreen titles:

NSW – 4
PS4 – 1

And this month again, Nintendo is the most successful publisher, with over 871 000 units sold (down from over 1 million units in July). The release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars was not enough to compensate for the drop in sales that impacted the evergreen titles. That being said, those sales remained unusually strong for September, as Super Mario 3D All-Stars only accounts for about 1/3 of total Software sales for Nintendo.

Here’s the Top 3 Publishers for September 2020:

  1. Nintendo: 871 000 units
  2. Square-Enix: 98 000 units
  3. Bandai-Namco: 88 000 units

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch reached a significant milestone in September: it’s now sold over 15 million units in Japan since launch. Sales did drop sharply compared to August 2020, but they remain unusually strong with 342 102 units sold.

Funnily enough, the Nintendo 3DS was the 2nd best-selling platform in September, due to Nintendo announcing the end of production for the remaining models but also the PlayStation 4 being left to die (shipments have slowed down to a trickle as Sony shifted their full focus on its successor). Sales more than doubled compared to August, with 10 872 units sold.

Here’s Hardware sales for September 2020:
