For the second month in a row (and the 3rd time since launch), Super Mario Party Jamboree was the best-selling game in Japan with 186.000 units sold. This brings total sales to 1.140.000 units, which means the game is the 31st Nintendo Switch title to become a million-seller at retail alone. And it did so within the first 3 months!

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is off to a strong start: it ranked #2 with over 140.000 units sold during the first two weeks. Not too shabby for the 3rd release of the game! In comparison, the Nintendo Switch version of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze sold only 123.000 units during a similar timeframe.

Publishers

Nintendo was once again the most successful publisher with 682.000 units sold in January. Nintendo has the following to thank for that performance: the strong sales of Super Mario Party Jamboree, the successful launch of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, and the steady sales of the usual evergreen titles (like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe).

Bandai-Namco was the 2nd most successful publisher with around 107.000 units sold. Most of those sales come from Tales of Graces f Remastered, with Freedom Wars Remastered making a more modest contribution.

  1. Nintendo: 682.000
  2. Bandai-Namco: 107.000
  3. Square-Enix: 104.000

Hardware

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch reached yet another milestone: it’s now sold over 35 million units since launch.

It sold 260.447 units in January: that’s a sharp drop compared to December (over 450.000 units, but that’s hardly a surprise for what is usually a fairly slow month (with the exception of New Year’s week).

Also, the tracking period for January was shorter than December’s (4 weeks vs 5 weeks), making the drop from December to January more significant than it actually was.

  1. Nintendo Switch: 260.447 (December 2024 – 452.210)
  2. PlayStation 5: 81.587 (December 2024 – 161.879)
