[Japan] Famitsu sales for H1 2022 (Fiscal Year) (Top 10 Software, Hardware)

Last month, Koichi Hamamura (former editor-in-chief of Famitsu magazine and current Senior Advisor for Digital Entertainment at Kadokawa) held a seminar about the state of the video games industry. During that seminar, he shared some sales data from Famitsu for the video games market in Japan, covering the first half of the current Fiscal Year (namely, March 28th to September 25th 2022).

Software

First, there’s the Top 10 Software which, unsurprisingly, is made exclusively of Nintendo Switch titles. Splatoon 3 is the best-selling title with over 2.7 million units sold at retail alone. It’s the only game that managed to sell over 1 million units during the first half of the current Fiscal Year.

Hardware

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales are more or less stable with over 2 million units sold (vs. 2.1 million units during the same period last year). The OLED model was by far the most popular (it sold more than the other two combined), though the original model still enjoyed great popularity with over 580 000 units sold.

As for the Lite model, it sold half as well as last year during the same period. While this may indicate consumers are moving away from this particular model, it’s worth noting that it has become increasingly harder to find in stores during the past few months.

Market Value

Overall, the Japanese video games market fared rather well during the first half of the current Fiscal Year.
