Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories – Developer Diary #3

Yesterday evening, Natsume published a third developer diary for Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories. This time, Taka Maekawa talked about one of the central elements of any Harvest Moon game: relationships. With this game, the developers paid particular attention to the balance between those and the other gameplay elements.

For example, they don’t want players to spend too much time trying to seduce their bachelor(ette) of choice, while having to neglect the other elements they love in a Harvest Moon game. Therefore, the developers spent a lot of time trying to balance dating, marriage and family in this game.

One of the first additions they made is an affection meter, found on each textbox, which will be very useful: after all, raising your affection level with the other villagers is key to bring back their memories. Foraging and gift giving is also back, and as you can imagine, each villager has their own tastes.

Finally, the development team added more bachelors and bachelorettes: besides April, Catherine, Emily, Gilbert, Hunter, and Tony from Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley, there’s also Luke and Andrea (two new characters), as well as Tabitha (the witch extraordinaire), and Gareth (the logical wizard). Apparently, getting married is pretty important in the game, but that’s something that will be discussed in a future Developer diary.
