Genei Ibun Roku #FE @ Famitsu: the developers talk (again) about how the project came to me

Back during E3 2015, VentureBeat had the opportunity to talk with Shinjiro Takada (Producer at Atlus), who explained how Genei Ibun Roku #FE (the Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem “crossover”) came to be. This week, Famitsu is featuring a rather lengthy article about about the game, which includes an interview with various developers working on the game.

Unfortunately, we don’t get to learn much more about the genesis of the game in this Famitsu interview. Back in 2009, when Atlus was done with the development of a Japanese photo booth app for the Nintendo DSi, Hitoshi Yamagami (Producer at Nintendo) went to see Atlus and told them he wanted to make a game mixing Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem.

But unfortunately, Atlus was too busy at the time (they were working on Devil Survivor 2), and they politely said “no”. That being said, Hitoshi Yamagami never gave up hope, and believed firmly things would turn around at one point:

“I was really bummed about it, but it wasn’t as though they had straight out said no, so I told Ando, ‘I’m sure we’ll cross paths with them again some time.”

Then one year later (more or less), he received a mail from Naoto Hiraoka (from Atlus) who asked him if their proposal was still holding up. The thing is, Atlus was pretty enthusiastic about a project such as a Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem crossover. In fact, Shinjiro Takada (Producer at Atlus) perceived the Fire Emblem series as a rival, so he was quite honoured to get such a proposal.

Genei Ibun Roku #FE (Wii U) comes out this Winter in Japan, and next year in Europe and North America.
