Bandai-Namco opens rights to various game properties

Today, Bandai-Namco has made a bold move to ensure some of its properties aren’t forgotten: the company has opened the rights for various IPs, allowing approved individuals and companies to use them (almost) however they want. To be more precise, Bandai-Namco now allows the use of characters, music, and stories from some of its games, and modifications (for character design or story for example) are also allowed.

But before they can use those IPs, individuals and companies will have to register to Bandai-Namco before beginning development. It looks like the procedure will be pretty painless, as the company will accept most application on principle as long as they don’t include any offensive content. Registration will open in April, and will only be for Japanese game companies at first (foreign companies or individuals will have to wait).

Of course, there’s a little catch: Bandai-Namco will receive a small percentage of sales for paid games. For free games, Bandai-Namco is also planning a special advertising scheme, where the company will receive a small percentage of the ad revenues.
