The Japanese video games market sure was in the groove last month! With nearly 675.000 units sold at retail alone, Rhythm Heaven Groove was the best-selling game in Japan.
The game is off to a remarkably strong start, selling over two times what its predecessor (Rhythm Heaven Megamix on Nintendo 3DS) did during its launch month (around 275.000 units sold in June 2015). And that’s not even counting digital sales, which were quite strong (it ranked #1 in the monthly Nintendo eShop Charts in July, after ranking #3 in June thanks to pre-orders).
Splatoon Raiders is also off to a strong start with nearly 475,000 sold during the first week: that’s the 4th best debut for a Nintendo Switch 2 game at retail. There’s little doubt it would have been the best-selling game in July had it not released during the very last week of the tracking period. Just like Rhythm Heaven Groove, its digital sales were quit strong: it ranked #1 in the monthly Nintendo eShop Charts in July.
Two games that also performed well enough to show up in the monthly Top 5 in July are Ganbare Goemon Dai Shuugou (which saw shortages at retail) and POWER PROS 2026-2027. The former sold around 80.000 units in total, with the Nintendo Switch version making up most of the sales.

Publishers
In July, Nintendo was once again the most successful publisher in Japan.
Thanks to two strong, popular releases, total sales exploded to well over 1 million units: 1.430.000 units to be precise! Rhythm Heave Groove and Splatoon Raiders account for a significant chunk of those sales (the two combined sold over 1 million units on their own). And of course, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream and the usual evergreen titles made up the rest of those sales.
Just like in June, Konami ranked #2 in July. Total sales reached 177.000 units, with over half of those coming from Ganbare Goemon Dai Shuugou, POWER PROS 2026-2027, and eFootball Kick-Off!.
Finally, Bandai-Namco ranked #3 with 78.000 units sold, with some of those sales coming from the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions of Digimon Story: Time Stranger.
- Nintendo: 1.430.000
- Konami: 177.000
- Bandai-Namco: 78.000
Hardware
After a major drop in June following the price hike back in late May, Nintendo Switch 2 sales increased slightly in July. The console sold nearly 137,000 units during that month, helped by the release of Splatoon Raiders and the bundle that launched on the same day.
As of July 2026, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold over 6.1 million units since launch. Due the price hike, future milestones will likely take (much) longer to reach, but it’s likely the console will hit at least a couple more by the end of the year.
- Nintendo Switch 2 – 136.648 (previous month: 100.166)
- PlayStation 5 – 41.065 (previous month: 36.175)
