Top 5 Software

New year, same game at the top of the monthly Software charts! In January, Mario Kart World was once again the best-selling game in Japan with around 124,000 units sold. Despite the discontinuation of the hardware bundle, it continued to drive Nintendo Switch 2 Software sales.

But while Mario Kart World did continue to dominate Software sales in Japan, if you were to combine SKUs, then Momotarou Dentetsu 2 ~Anata no Machi mo Kitto Aru~ would be #1 with around 143,000 units sold.

The two versions of Pokémon Legends: Z-A sold a combined 134.000 units, making the game the #2 best-selling one in January.

Publishers

For Nintendo, 2026 started the same way 2025 ended: at the top of the Publishers Top 3. The company sold around 561.000 units in January, with Mario Kart World and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (including the newly released Nintendo Switch 2 Edition) contributing a good chunk of those sales, and with the usual evergreen titles making up the rest.

Konami is #2 with around 166.000 units sold. Those sales mostly come from the two versions of Momotarou Dentetsu 2 ~Anata no Machi mo Kitto Aru~.

Finally, The Pokémon Company dropped to #3 in January with 148.000 units sold. The two versions of Pokémon Legends: Z-A account for the majority of those sales.

  1. Nintendo – 561.000
  2. Konami – 166.000
  3. The Pokémon Company – 148.000
Hardware

January is a fairly slow period for the video games market in Japan, and yet the Nintendo Switch 2 still saw strong sales with around 453,000 units sold (a good chunk come Week 1 and New Year’s specifically, though).

And last month, the Nintendo Switch 2 passed another milestone: it’s now sold over 4 million units since launch. Not bad for a console that launched barely 7 months ago!

Also, Famitsu points out that January saw a notable increase in the sale of the stand-alone Nintendo Switch 2. This is obviously due to Nintendo stopping the production of the Mario Kart World at the end of December 2025, which logically led to a lower sales ratio for that bundle.

  1. Nintendo Switch 2 – 453.433 (previous month: 815.632)
  2. Nintendo Switch – 91.109 (previous month: 153.619)
