[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 11, 2020 (March 09 – March 15) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 11, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 11 saw the release of quite a few games, but not all of them (and not all versions!) made it to the Top 10 Software shared by Famitsu. On Nintendo platforms, the biggest release of the week is My Hero: One’s Justice 2, which is off to a decent debut with 16 997 units sold during the first few days. Only the Nintendo Switch version charted, which means the PlayStation 4 version sold less than 6 827 units.

In comparison, the previous game sold about 24 000 units at launch on Nintendo Switch alone. The drop was expected for this “sequel”, as similar games on the same platforms generally tend to sell less than the first one (unless there’s major changes and improvements). What’s more, the first game was released less than 2 years ago. My Hero One’s Justice ended up selling at least 52 350 units at retail, and it will be interesting to see if this new game will be able to come close to that number or not.

Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch version of Winning Post 9 2020 did not chart (only the PlayStation 4 version did), which means it sold less than 6 827 units. In comparison, the original version of the game sold 5 171 units on Nintendo Switch, and it’s basically guaranteed this new version sold even less.

Highlights this week include:

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX had a decent second week, with 46 391 units sold (-67%). It will reach the 200 000 units milestone next week;
  • Pokémon Sword and Shield has now sold over 3.5 million units (3 509 920 units to be precise), and it’s getting closer and closer to LTD sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (3 602 272 units as of this week).

Overall, sales of evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch are slightly down this week, but the drop remains quite limited, because demand for games remain strong.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales slightly increased to 57 724 units (vs. 50 585 units the previous week), thanks to the OG model this time around (it received more stock). But despite that increase, it’s still the Lite model that’s pulling sales, which is not surprising since it’s the only model Nintendo have ample stocks of.

Thanks to that slight increase, sales are very slightly up Year on Year, as the Nintendo Switch sold 55 478 units during the same week last year. The gap is going to be even bigger next week, thanks to the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and its bundle, combined with the release of the Coral colour for the Nintendo Switch Lite. It’s not clear how big the increase will be, but it’s already guaranteed to be the biggest week of the year for the Nintendo Switch.

The real question is how big the drop in the following weeks is going to be; after all, the production and shipments of new Nintendo Switch consoles are still greatly impacted by the Coronavirus pandemy, so there’s only so many units Nintendo can ship to retailers before they run out of them. Will Nintendo send everything for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, or will they instead pace themselves, limiting shipments to avoid a collapse in Week 13 and later?

This week, Nintendo Switch sales have topped 1 million units this year alone, a bit later than expected due to the shortages that have been impacting the OG model for many weeks now. That’s still much earlier than last year: as of Week 12, “only” 862 559 units had been sold in 2019. Total sales now stand at 12 408 646 units, with 10 892 947 units for the OG model, and 1 515 699 units for the Lite model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are more or less flat, with 1 362 units sold this week (vs. 1 297 units the previous week, and 4 659 units during the same week last year). YTD sales now stand at 13 208 units (vs. 74 625 units after the same amount of weeks last year), and LTD sales at 24 509 355 units.
