Japan: more sales data for Week 1 2019, Holiday Season 2018 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!

Media Create (Week 1)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 1 150 000 units, which is 108.71% of Week 52 sales. Both Software and Hardware sales increased, thanks to New Year’s.

Media Create also shared some data for the New Year’s period (December 24th to January 6th), revealing that Software sales topped 2 141 000 units (which is 106% of sales during the same period last year).

Thanks to strong titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (534 000 units sold during that period) and Super Mario Party (194 000 units during that period), Nintendo Switch Software sales increased noticeably: 2018 sales account for 167.65% of sales during the same period last year.

As for Hardware sales, they topped 613 000 units, which is 116.71% of sales during the same period. Nintendo Switch saw a noticeable increase, with 133.59% of sales during the same period in 2017. But it wasn’t the only one responsible for the increase in Hardware sales: the special promotion for the PlayStation allowed it to sell 134.18% of 2017 sales during the same period.

Thanks to their strong sales, those two platforms were able to compensate for the drop in sales for the Nintendo 3DS (48.55% of 2017 sales) and the PlayStatioon Vita (38.72% of 2017 sales).

Overall, the New Year’s season was pretty good this time around, but Media Create point out that Christmas eve is included in the period tracked this year, so that’s something to keep in mind (in other words: the increase wouldn’t be as strong if that wasn’t the case).

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 2)

No data this week, unfortunately.

Dengeki (Week 1)

Dengeki report that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was the best-selling game in Japan for the 5th week in a row. Its sales increased to 281 000 units during the first week of 2019, bringing total sales to 2.67 million units. Given the current sales trajectory, they expect it to outsell Splatoon 2 as early as mid-January, and therefore become the best-selling game on Nintendo Switch. As of this week, Splatoon 2 has sold over 2.88 million units.

This week, the Nintendo Switch grabbed the top 8 spots of the Top 50, with the usual suspects:

  • Super Mario Party – 97 000 units this week, 870 000 units LTD
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! – 67 000 units this week, 1.33 million units LTD
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 51 000 units this week, 1.99 million units LTD

Today, Dengeki also shared some data for the holiday season (and more precisely the period going from November 1st to January 6th). Here’s some raw data to begin with:

  • Hardware: 2.59 million units (-3.4%) / 78.4 billion Yen (+10.4%)
  • Software: 9.22 million units (-6.6%) / 61.6 billion Yen (+5.7%)
  • Total: 140 billion Yen (+8.3%)

While both Hardware and Software sales did drop, more revenue was generated due to the higher price of the games and consoles sold. As a result, it’s the 3rd year in a row that holiday sales are increasing in Japan.

Thanks to the massive success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo Switch sales increased by 25.3%, to 1.86 million units. As for Software sales, they nearly doubled with 6.6 million units (+98%). It overshadowed all other platforms: 72% market share for Hardware, and 71.6% market share for Software. In other words, over 70% of total sales (Hardware + Software) between November 1st and January 6th came from the Nintendo Switch alone.

Here’s the Top 5 Software for the holiday season:
