Week 21 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 21, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 268 000 units, which is 123.23% of Week 20 sales. Sales actually increased this time around, and for the first time in 5 weeks.

Sales of previously released titles did drop slightly (98.83% of Week 20 sales), but that drop was more than compensated by the increase for new releases. Indeed, sales of new titles were multiplied by 5, with 464.80% of Week 20 sales. Sales still remain below the 300 000 units threshold, but for Media Create, we can see some signs of recovery for the Japanese market after several pretty rough weeks.

Week 22 – Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)

Week 21, May 2017 (Dengeki)

Dengeki doesn’t have much to say about Week 21 sales. Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers sold about 17 000 units at launch, less than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and its 21 000 units sold (522 000 units LTD). As for Monster Hunter XX, it sold an additional 9 000 units, with 1 577 000 units since launch.

This week, there were a total of 12 new releases (though only 8 of them landed in the Top 50), which led to an increase for both Hardware and Software:

  • Hardware: 64 000 units (+8.1%)
  • Software: 272 000 units (+29.7%)

Since next week is the beginning of June, Dengeki chose to take a look at how the market fared in May. Unsurprisingly, Hardware was up by a large margin: +26.7%, with 292 000 units sold. This is obviously thanks to the Nintendo Switch, despite its being in short supply since launch. On the other hand, Software suffered a large drop, with 1 199 000 units: that’s -33.1% compared to the same month.

  • Hardware: 292 000 units sold (+26.7%) / 7.9 billion Yen (+29.1%)
  • Software: 1 199 000 units (-33.1%) / 6.8 billion Yen (-39%)
  • Total: 14.7 billion Yen (-14.7%)

Dengeki notes that it’s second month in a row where sales are down Year on Year.

Finally, here’s the Top 5 Software for May;

  2. [3DS] Monster Hunter XX (Capcom): 56 000 units

Dengeki didn’t miss the fact that only Mario Kart 8 Deluxe manage to sell over 100 000 units, and that sales drop to the 50 000 range right with #2. The write is certainly hoping for a recovery during June, which is another slow month for the video game market (though nowhere near as bad as May).

April 2017 (Famitsu, digital estimates)

In just a few days, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe managed to sell about 26 997 units via the Nintendo eShop, which is a pretty positive result because the game wasn’t sold out (the console was, though!), and typically, digital sales on Nintendo platforms are pretty low.

Take Mario Sports Superstars and Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax, for example: they only sold 2 982 units and 2 216 units respectively on the Nintendo eShop throughout the month. As for Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, it sold a respectable 13 710 units.

But the most impressive performance is for Snipperclips: Cut it out, together!, said to have sold 58 078 additional units this month, and 97 804 units since launch. Since there’s no physical version, those estimated digital sales represent everything the game has sold since launch. It looks like word of mouth has been doing wonders for that particular title!
