Japan: more sales data for Week 47 2018, October 2018, Pokémon: Let’s Go! (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!

Media Create (Week 47)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that total Software sales topped 602 000 units, which is 62.80% of Week 46 sales. Unsurprisingly, sales dropped sharply, following the launch of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! on Nintendo Switch the previous week. The drop is also quite noticeable with Hardware: sales dropped to 63.81% of Week 46 sales, mostly due to the Nintendo Switch.

But despite both Software and Hardware sales being down this week, sales remain strong, and at an appropriate level for the holiday season. Of course, they will keep on increasing as we get closer to Christmas.

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 48)

This week, we have the Day-1 sell-through for a few Nintendo Switch games:

  • [3DS] Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth (Atlus) – 40%. Surprisingly low debut, it seems the game mostly sold to players who had pre-ordered the game;
  • [NSW] Kamen Rider: Climax Scramble Zi-O (Bandai Namco Games) – 20%. Low debut, but holiday sales should salvage it;
  • [PS4] [NSW] Lapis x Labyrinth (Nippon Ichi Software) – 30%. Low-ish debut, not too surprising for a Nippon Ichi Software title. PlayStation 4 version sold more;
  • [NSW] Billion Road (Bandai Namco Games). No sell-through provided, which implies a terrible debut. Hopefully, holiday season sould help with sales in the mid-term.

Dengeki (Week 47)

Dengeki report that Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! sold about 177 000 units during its second week, with Pikachu still enjoying great popularity:

  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! – 97 000 units sold this week, 429 000 units sold LTD
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! – 80 000 units sold this week, 351 000 units sold LTD
  • Total: 781 000 units sold LTD

Since the holiday season is finally there, Dengeki expect the game to reach 1 million units sold before Christmas. In fact, it should be able to do so by Week 49.

Finally, Dengeki report that Neko Tomo sold about 5 000 units on Nintendo 3DS.

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch keeps on enjoying a strong performance. Granted, sales did drop following the launch of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!, but they remain strong. With about 124 000 units this week, the Nintendo Switch is overwhelming the competition: its market share is at 79.4%, after all.

Last year, between November and the first week of January, the Nintendo Switch ended up selling about 1.5 million units total. It will certainly be interesting to see how much further sales will grow this year, especially with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releasing on December 7th (not to mention the lack of shortages).

Famitsu – Digital Sales Estimates (October 2018)

In its latest issue, Famitsu share their latest digital sales estimates, covering October (and more precisely October 1st to October 28th, to 4 weeks in total).

It reveals that Puyo Puyo eSports sold an estimated 60 324 units during the first 3 days, which is a really strong performance for a digital-only game… then again, the massive launch discount (game was available for only 500 Yen until today) is the very reason it sold so much. Quite interestingly, the Nintendo Switch version seems to have been the most popular one, with about 35 410 units sold.

Finally, we learn that Super Mario Party may have sold about 12 168 units during its launch month, which is way too low. This shows the limit of Famitsu’s digital estimates, as those are not based on actual sales. While they’re generally rather reliable, it’s unfortunately one of the few cases where they’re not.
