Japan: more sales data for Week 16 2019, Langrisser I & II, Fiscal Year 2018-19 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 17)

Unfortunately, no data this week due to the Golden Week.

Dengeki (Week 16)

Dengeki report that Langrisser I and II sold about 17 000 units at launch, with 7 000 units on Nintendo Switch specifically. The sell-through ratio is pretty good: 80%, which indicates that retailers were able to successfully gauge demand for this remake. As for Taishou × Taishou Alice all in one, it sold pretty poorly: only 663 units during its launch week…

Not much activity among the best-sellers of the Top 50 Software, with mostly the usual Nintendo Switch titles at the top.

This week, Dengeki give us their latest update on the widening gap between successful games and less successful ones, as well as the lower of hits released on the market: two factors that contributed to the drop in sales during the previous Fiscal Year (which ended on March 31st 2019).

Here’s a comparison between Fiscal Year 2017-18 and 2018-19 regarding hits:

2017-18

  • Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Nintendo 3DS): 2.32 million units
  • Splatoon 2 (Nintendo Switch): 2.25 million units
  • Monster Hunter World (PlayStation 4): 1.97 million units
  • Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Ages (Nintendo 3DS): 1.8 million units
  • Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (PlayStation 4): 1.38 million units

In total, there was no less than 7 million-sellers during that year.

2018-19

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo Switch): 3.05 million units
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (Nintendo Switch): 1.47 million units

In total, there was only 2 million-sellers during that year.

So not only the number of million-sellers dropped like a rock filled with lead, the gap between successful and less successful games just keeps widening:

  • Million-sellers: 7 > 2
  • 1 million units to 500 000 units: 1 > 7
  • 500 000 units to 200 000 units: 15 > 19
  • less than 10 000 units: 165 > 196 (39.2% of games released)

Naturally, Dengeki hope that the current Fiscal Year will see the release of many hits, that will reinvigorate and pull the whole market up.
