Japan: more sales data for Week 15 2019, Fiscal Year 2018-19 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 16)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for just one Nintendo Switch game (platforms and games are usually listed based on sales, from most successful to least successful):

  • [PS4] [NSW] Langrisser I & II (Kadokawa Games) (¥6.800) – 50%. Somewhat satisfying debut, but shipment is said to be quite low. Unsurprisingly, PlayStation 4 version was more successful (though it’s not clear by how much).

Dengeki (Week 15)

This week, Dengeki report that Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit sold about 24 000 units at launch, and that Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster sold about 14 000 units at launch. There was not much activity at the top of the chart this time around.

Also, we have sales for another new Nintendo Switch game, that completely flopped:

  • 49./00. [NSW] V-Rally 4 (Oizumi Amuzio) – 613 / NEW

This week, Dengeki share some more data for the past Fiscal Year (April 2nd 2018 to March 31st 2019), this time focusing on the most success publishers.

For the 16th year in a row, Nintendo was the most successful publisher with no less than 6 games in the Top 10 Software. Its market share even grew from 30.9% to 36.3%, which means that more than 1/3 of all games sold in Japan last year were from Nintendo.

Nintendo’s most succesful games were:

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with 3.05 million units sold
  • Super Mario Party, with 990 000 units sold
  • Splatoon 2, with 720 000 units sold

Bandai-Namco went from #5 to #3 with games such as Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun on Nintendo Switch (330 000 units sold) and Ace Combat 7 on PlayStation 4 (250 000 units). Square-Enix dropped from #2 to #3, hurt by the lack of games like Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (which really boosted its sales during the previous Fiscal Year).

Dengeki point out that 9 of the companies in the Top 10 are the same as the previous Fiscal Year, and those have a tight grip on the market. But there was one big surprise (which isn’t really that big of a surprise for anyone following Japanese sales closely): Microsoft Japan jumped from #29 all the way to #7, thanks to the strong performance of Minecraft on Nintendo Switch (740 000 units).

It’s the first time that a Minecraft game is releasing on such a healthy platform, so it’s no wonder Microsoft would benefit from it. The PlayStation Vita version did sell well over 1 million units, but it was published by Sony themselves (it was before Microsoft bought Minecraft).

The first version of the game published by Microsoft in Japan (with the exception of Xbox versions) was Minecraft: Wii U Edition. This version was fairly popular, but it was clearly held back by the Wii U. Minecraft was also released on New Nintendo 3DS, but only via the Nintendo eShop (and a special, limited bundle last year).

Unfortunately, Level-5 dropped of the Top 10 of publishers, which was to be expected: their best-selling game is The Snack World Trejarers Gold, with 120 000 units… not the most steller of performances! Its rank dropped from #7 to #16.
