[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 13, 2017 (March 27 – April 2) [Top 50]

This week saw the release of several games in Japan, but only one was on Nintendo platforms: Mario Sports Superstars, on Nintendo 3DS. Its launch sales are rather lackluster: only 32 416 units sold, which is less than Mario Golf: World Tour a few years ago (and that one already had a rather lowkey debut).
It looks like having 5 sports in a single game wasn’t really an interesting proposition for many players. Sales in the upcoming weeks (up until early may, past the Golden Week) will tell us if we can expect Mario Sports Superstars to sell on the long run or not.
After a good second week, Monster Hunter XX is holding pretty well with 127 721 units sold (-54%). Unfortunately, with the end of the Spring break, sales are bound to drop sharply starting next week, and it will be interesting to see the sales trajectory in the upcoming weeks and months. 1.5 million units is well within reach, but it’s another matter for 2 million units (Capcom’s initial forecast for the game… in March only).
Next, let’s take a look at how the various Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20 are faring:
- 05./02. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 29.307 / 331.387 (-25%). Since Nintendo Switch sales dropped this week (again, due to shortages), it’s no surprise that sales would drop for that game too. And yet, the drop is rather limited, which is a positive sign!
Speaking of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Wii U version actually saw an increase in sales this week, due to payday and the Spring break. It sold 8 131 units this week (+4%), and 89 319 units since launch, further confirming it will sell well over 100 000 units LTD. Combined, both versions of the game have sold 420 706 units (with 500 000 units being the next milestone, which should be reached pretty easily).
- 07./03. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 16.517 / 153.901 (-24%). Same as Zelda: Nintendo Switch sales dropped this week due to shortages, so sales are also down for this game.
Unfortunately, the other Nintendo Switch games were kicked out of the Top 20 by the many new releases this week. It’s not guaranteed they will resurface in the upcoming weeks (before the Golden Week), especially if Nintendo Switch shortages continue. Romance of the Three Kingdoms 13 with Power-Up Kit did not chart.
Finally, let’s take a look at sales of the remaining games in the second half of the Top 20:
- 12./06. [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 8.853 / 3.229.854 (-11%). This one is still selling at a steady pace, in line with Pokémon X and Y back in 2014 (while taking into account the dual-pack, obviously);
- 15./14. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 7.070 / 1.009.393 (+4%). It doesn’t look like there’s anything that could stop that one (yet), and it definitely would not be surprising to see it among the best-sellers for the full year.

Hardware-wise, shortages reared their ugly heads again, as seen with the noticeable drop for Nintendo Switch sales. And yet, the console still managed to sell over 45 000 units this week, which is rather encouraging given the lack of notable releases. Right now, the console is only selling thanks to the launch titles and anticipations for upcoming titles (such as Splatoon 2).
April and May are usually pretty slow months for sales (with the exception of the Golden Week), and so it will be interesting to see how much the Nintendo Switch ends up selling during those two months. In May, there will be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to sustain sales, but in April, there’s nothing (unless you count anticipation for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe!).
As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales did drop again this week, but they remain above their 2016 levels (33 954 units vs 29 807). The release of Mario Sports Superstars didn’t really have an impact on sales, which is no surprise (it’s not really a system seller). Right now, total sales for 2017 stand at 433 032 units, as opposed to 420 249 units in 2016. It will be interesting how long it will take for 2017 to fall below 2016 sales!
Finally, the Wii U sold 449 units: a massive increase week on week (+38 units, quite simply unbelievable)!
