Japan – Media Create sales for Week 34, 2015 (August 17 – 23) [Top 50]

As expected, both Software and Hardware sales dropped sharply during Week 34 with the end of the Obon holidays, but Nintendo platforms and games still remain relatively strong.

Super Robot Wars BX was one of the two new releases for Week 34 in Japan, and the only one for Nintendo platforms (such a low number of releases is not unusual for post-holidays weeks). Sales for this second entry on Nintendo 3DS are both batter and worse than those of the first entry:

• Super Robot Wars BX sold 98 366 units during the first four days, which is not as good as Super Robot Wars UX
• sellthrough ratio (according to Famitsu) is over 80%, which is better than the first game on Nintendo 3DS.

In other words, Super Robot Wars BX didn’t sell as much as its predecessors, but it sold “better” in that Bandai-Namco shipped just the right amount of copies to retailers (which is definitely good news for the company). Unfortunately, sales for this kind of games are pretty frontloaded (with most of them happening during the first two weeks), so it’s unlikely Super Robot Wars BX will manage to catch up with Super Robot Wars UX.

As for the rest of the Top 20, sales are dropping left and right, and no game or platform is spared. That being said, the end of the Obon holidays didn’t prevent some Nintendo games from staying strong, such as Splatoon with 23 874 units sold. Compared to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Mario Kart 8 when they launched, Splatoon is selling better week after week, and it will most likely outsell the former by next week.

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is another game performing pretty well this week, with almost 1 000 000 units sold since launch: in fact, this threshold will be reached in early September! Finally, the drop in sales allowed two games to come back in the Top 20: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (#16) and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (#20).

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS is the most impacted by the drop in sales, mainly because it was selling much better than the other platforms last week. That being said, sales remain relatively strong, with 28 279 units sold this week (vs 35 702 during the same week in 2014). What’s more, they are bound to go up again next week, with the release of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King and the Metallic Red New Nintendo 3DS XL.

Since the post-Obon holiday drop for the Wii U was worse in 2014 than this year, the Wii U is actually up Year on Year with 11 302 units sold (vs 8 985 units during the same week in 2014). This allows the Year to Date total to remain above the total for 2014 for a little bit longer.

But now, the question is: will the Wii U manage to stay above the 10 000 units threshold until the release of Super Mario Maker on September 10th? Sales are bound to drop again next week, especially due to people possibily waiting for the Super Mario Maker bundles before buying a Wii U. We will see next Wednesday, at the usual time!
