[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 21, 2021 (May 17 – May 23) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 21, 2021 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!

Famitsu (Week 21)

Week 21 saw the release of quite a few Nintendo Switch games, bringing some fresh blood in the Top 10 Software.

Rune Factory 5, the long-awaited new entry in the Rune Factory series, is off to a great start. Just like Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town, it broke the series’ record for 1st week sales with 102 853 units sold at retail alone. In comparison, the previous entry (Rune Factory 4, released in 2012 on Nintendo 3DS sold 88 700 units at launch.

Rune Factory 4 on Nintendo 3DS ended up selling over 180 000 units at retail, and there’s little doubt Rune Factory 5 will end up outselling it (especially if you factor in digital sales).

How much Rune Factory 5 ends up selling in the long run depends on how big of an impact the various issues encountered at launch will have on sales. It’s certainly baffling that, after Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town greatly suffered from similar issues and saw its sales tail cut short (retailers still have not sold all the units shipped for launch week), Marvelous didn’t delay the game to ensure the game launched in good conditions.

Next: Miitopia. This port of the Nintendo 3DS game is off to a fantastic start with 72 725 units sold. In comparison, the original version sold only 28 231 units, which means the Nintendo Switch port sold nearly 3 times more… and that’s not counting digital sales!

The original version ended up selling over 240 000 units at retail, and there’s little doubt the port will end up selling more. Next few weeks will tells us whether we can expect Miitopia to become the latest evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch!

Finally, Angelique Luminarise is also off to a great start with 12 844 units sold at retail.

This is the best debut for the series since Angelique Etoile (15 732 units at launch) on PlayStation 2, back in… 2004! A pretty satisfying performance for Koei-Tecmo, though unfortunately, this kind of game does tend to be rather frontloaded, and so Angelique Luminarise should be out of the Top 10 next week (it should be able to hang around in the Top 30 Software, at least).

Unfortunately, there’s no new milestone this week. The usual evergreen titles are still selling well, though only Ring Fit Adventure and Minecraft saw their sales increase. It would appear that New Pokémon Snap is having trouble selling the big shipments it received from the Golden Week.

Famitsu – Hardware

This week again, Nintendo Switch sales increased and nearly topped 100 000 units (with 99 118 units to be precise). This great performance is due to the new releases, the new colour for the Nintendo Switch Lite, and more importantly the unusually high demand for the console (which does not seem about to drop any time soon).

It’s not clear how many units of the Blue Nintendo Switch Lite were sold, though we can see that sales for that model increased (33 229 units, up from 23 290 units last week), while those for the OG model dropped slightly (65 889 units, down from 72 121 units last week).

Last year, Week 21 was one of the weeks that had seen a more substantial shipment than usual, which is why sales had increased to 52 557 units. But that increase clearly isn’t enough to keep up with 2021 sales, and so the gap between 2021 and 2020 has widened some more with nearly 350 000 units more for 2021 compared to last year. So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold 2 606 756 units this week, up from 2 263 683 units last year.

As of this week, the Nintendo Switch has sold 19 947 130 units. Unless sales drop sharply next week (less than 43 000 units sold), then the console will hit the 20 million units milestone. By the end of the year, it will come pretty close to outselling the Nintendo 3DS, which counts among the best-selling consoles of all times in Japan!

Consumers keep on favouring the OG model, with 16 119 330 units sold as of this week, as opposed to “only” 3 827 800 units for the Lite model. It will be interesting to see how much the rumoured new Nintendo Switch model will change the sales dynamic (especially if this new model does replace the OG model).

Finally, the Nintendo 3DS sold 376 units this week (down from 495 units last week, and 2 084 units last year). YTD sales now stand at 13 702 units (down from 27 903 units last year), and LTD sales at 24 572 610 units.
