[Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea] Famitsu and Media Create sales for Week 22, 2020 (May 25 – May 31) [Top 30]
Here’s the latest sales reports from Famitsu and Media Create, with Hardware and Software sales for Week 22, 2020 in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea!
Famitsu (Week 22)
Week 22 saw the release of quite a few games, with 4 of them making it in the Top 10 Software provided by Famitsu. But even the most popular one didn’t manage to pose much of a threat to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which ranks #1 yet another week with 102 749 units sold. The massive increase in Nintendo Switch sales helped a fair bit, as many people were finally able to get the console they needed to play the game.
Since launch, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has already sold 4 685 419 units at retail alone, and it should reach the 5 million units milestone in late June/early July.
The best-selling entry this week is Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, which sold 90 789 units at launch. This is a really good performance, especially compared to previous releases:
- Wii version: 79 163 units sold at launch, 163 442 units LTD
- New Nintendo 3DS version: 43 762 units sold at launch, 85 454 units LTD
It didn’t quite manage to outsell Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (97 274 units sold at launch), but it did come pretty close. What’s more, digital sales are expected to be fairly substantial, which is pretty noteworthy as the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers were only launched several months after Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was released. Therefore, this Definitive Edition of the original is expected to have a (much) higher digital ratio.
In other words, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition sold more or less the same as the latest (and most popular) entry in the series… despite being the 4th release of the game (Wii, New Nintendo 3DS, Wii Downloads on Wii U, and now Nintendo Switch)! This shows just how much the series has grown on Nintendo Switch. The Definitive Edition should be able to outsell the original on Wii (even without digital sales), though unfortunately, it will most likely not be able to sell as much in the long term as Xenoblade Chronicles 2 did.
As for Uta no Prince-Sama: Amazing Aria & Sweet Serenade Love for Nintendo Switch, it did fairly well for the late port of a port with 9 216 units sold (slightly better than the previous Uta no Prince-Sama on Nintendo Switch, which sold 8 410 units at launch). In comparison, the original version of both games sold about 6 000 units at launch on PSP, but that was before the series really became popular. The PlayStation Vita version of this same port sold about 14 000 units at launch.
Other highlights this week include:
- 03./02. [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo) – 39.518 / 956.559 (+236%). Massive increase in sales this week thanks to a sizeable shipment. It will become a million-seller before the end of the month;
- 05./04. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe <RCE> (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} (¥5.980) – 10.415 / 2.965.844 (+16%). The 3 million milestone is in sight, and should be reached before the end of the month.
Pretty much all the evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch saw their sales increase (or stay flat in the case of Splatoon 2) this week, thanks to the massive increase in Nintendo Switch sales (which didn’t just benefit to Animal Crossing: New Horizons).

As expected, Nintendo did ship many more Nintendo Switch units this week: sales jumped from 52 557 units to 107 593 units. Demand for the console remains extremely high… so high that, despite that increase, it was still impossible to buy one without winning one of the lotteries at various retailers. Unfortunately, sales should drop next week, though it’s not clear how big the drop will be. One thing’s for sure: it’s going to be a little while before people can simply walk in a store and be able to buy the console without entering any lottery…
Year on Year, the increase in sales is quite notable: the Nintendo Switch only sold 33 154 units during the same week last year, and the gap between 2020 and 2019 sales is now over 1 million units again. By Week 22 2019, the Nintendo Switch had sold “only” 1 327 727 units, vs. 2 371 727 units this year. LTD sales now stand at 13 754 707 units, with 2 266 677 units for the Lite model, and 11 488 030 units for the OG model.
As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sold 1 157 units this week (vs. 2 084 units the previous week, and 2 255 units during the same week last year). YTD sales now stand at 29 060 units (vs. 119 770 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and LTD sales at 24 525 207 units.
