Japan: more sales data for Week 38 2019, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 39)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a couple of Nintendo Switch games (games and platforms are listed from best-selling to worst-selling):

  • [PS4] [NSW] Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout (Koei Tecmo) – 60%. A pretty good debut, apparently an all-time record for the series according to Takashi Mochizuki from the Wall Street Journal;
  • [NSW] Disaster Report 4 Plus: Summer Memories (Granzella) – 10%. A poor debut in line with many other late ports on Nintendo Switch.

Dengeki (Week 38)

Dengeki report that The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening sold about 132 000 units at launch, which is about 60% of all units shipped to retailers. This may seem a bit on the low side, but retailers will have no trouble selling the remaining units (especially with the public holiday on Monday).

In comparison, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sold about 204 000 units at launch (and 1.22 million units LTD). It enjoyed strong sales in the long run, and Dengeki are hoping The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will do the same.

Other entries this week include Cardfight!! Vanguard EX on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 with 13 000 units sold (10 000 units on Nintendo Switch alone), and Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch on the same platforms with 15 000 units sold (9 739 units on Nintendo Switch alone).

Here’s how the other entries in the Top 50 fared:

  • Jakou no Lyla ~Trap of Musk~ (Idea Factory): 4 185 units. A surprisingly decent performance for an Otome game on Nintendo Switch;
  • AI: The Somnium Files (Spike-Chunsoft): 1 767 units on Nintendo Switch, and 2 267 units on PlayStation 4. An unexpected poor performance for a game pretty much exclusively aimed at western players.

Dengeki report that the Nintendo Switch Lite sold about 170 000 units at launch. Combined with the OG model (61 000 units), the Nintendo Switch sold about 231 000 units during Week 38, accounting for 73.6% of sales during that week. They also point out that it’s the first time since Week 1 that sales are above the 200 000 units/week threshold.

So far this Fiscal Year, the ratio of home consoles vs portable consoles is 86.4% / 13.6%. The market is quite clearly centered around home consoles, and more specifically the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4. It will be interesting to see how this ratio will evolve with the handheld-only Nintendo Switch Lite on the market.

Week 38 was pretty strong for the video games market:

  • Hardware: 261 000 units (+198.9%), best week so far this Fiscal Year
  • Software: 446 000 units (+16.9%)
