[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 11, 2016 (March 14 -20) [Top 50]

Update

We just added the Top 50 for Week 11: you will find it below!

***

During Week 11, several games came out on Nintendo platforms in Japan: Pokkén Tournament (on Wii U), and the Happy Price Selection titles (on Nintendo 3DS). Let’s start with Pokkén Tournament, which had a pretty decent debut with over 69 000 units sold (roughly 40-60% of all units shipped to retailers).

While it’s true that this is nothing to write home about, this is the Wii U we’re talking about (a platform where even well-known IP can and have underperformed). Now it remains to be seen how well it will keep selling in the upcoming weeks, especially during the Golden Week (in late April / early May).Wil lthe strength of the Pokémon brand carry it all the way to 200 000 units sold (100 000 units is already a lock).

Interesting detail: Pokkén Tournament has already outsold Street Fighter V (though obviously, comparing the two doesn’t make much sense).

Pokkén TournamentThe second entry of Week 11 for Nintendo platforms is the Happy Price Selection of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which sold almost 7 000 units during the first four days (0-20% of all units shipped to retailers). It’s no surprise that this game in particular is the only one to chart among the Happy Price Selection titles. After all, ever since its launch in November 2012, it’s been one of the strongest ever-green titles on Nintendo 3DS.

With over 4 million units at retail for Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Animal Crossing is pretty much the only major IP from Nintendo that didn’t experience a significant drop in sales compared to the Wii / DS era. Of course, this budget price version of the game will also keep on selling well on long periods of time, too, and will attract even more new players.

The Happy Price Selection version of Tomodachi Life did chart, but only in Famitsu’s Top 30. It’s #25, and sold 3 136 units during the first four days according to Famitsu (20-40% of all units shipped to retailers).

Next, we have Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics and Splatoon, which are still enjoying some good and steady sales.

The first one sold over 12 000 units during Week 11, which is a drop of 10%. It’s now sold over 100 000 units, which is a pretty solid performance, bound to get even better with the upcoming holidays and the actual Olympics in Summer. As for Splatoon, it sold 10 081 units (-1%), and 1 301 500 units at retail since launch: Japanese players are still as fresh as ever!

As for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, it sold 7 705 units during Week 11, which is a sharp drop (85%, not really unusual for a second week, especially for a HD remaster). It’s the total opposite for Super Mario Maker, which saw its sales soar during Week 11: +53%!

This is obviously due to the significant increase in Wii U sales (thanks, Pokkén Tournament and your bundle!), as those of Super Mario Maker are very closely tied to hardware sales (since it’s part of the Wii U Premium Pack most people buying a Wii U are getting). Unfortunately, they’re bound to drop again next week due to Wii U shortages, but also the large number of new games releasing during Week 12.

Finally, we have three Nintendo 3DS games which may well be pushed out of the Top 20 next week, due to the large number of new games coming out:

  • Doraemon: Shin Nobita no Nihon Tanjou (5 018 units sold, -22%, 18 893 units since launch)
  • Monster Hunter X (4 391 units sold, -24%, 2 715 326 units since launch)
  • Yo-kai Watch Busters (4 360 units sold, -10%, 2 232 744 units since launch)

As a bonus, here’s the sales of that Wii games that simply refuses to die:

18./21. [WII] Momotaro Dentetsu 2010: Sengoku Ishin no Hero Daishuugou! no Maki [Nintendo Selects] <TBL> (Hudson) {2011.01.20} (¥2.667) – 4.719 / 309.637 <80-100%> (+25%) [Famitsu]

Hardware-wise, things are pretty calm for the Nintendo 3DS. Its sales are pretty steady, with 26 042 units sold during Week 11 (only ~500 units less than Week 10). What’s more, the drop compared to the same week in 2015 is only about 2 000 units, which is a pretty positive sign.

After all, Nintendo 3DS sales have remained (more or less) steady without many strong releases so far, in 2016. Next week is bound to be a good one for Nintendo’s handheld (and the market as a whole), with the release of Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3, the second Ansatsu Kyoushitsu / Assassination Classroom game, and more.

As for the Wii U, its sales tripled during Week 11 (12 998 units sold), mainly thanks to the Pokkén Tournament bundle. Unfortunately, sales could have been even better if said bundle had not sold out before launch: the vast majority of sales for it comes from pre-orders.

Unfortunately, Wii U shortages are far from over (despite a short respite a few weeks ago), which means sales will most definitely drop sharply next week. At this rate, things might not go back to normal before mid-April (at the earliest), which is definitely going to hurt sales for Super Mario Maker (and Splatoon, to a lesser extent).
