[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 40, 2019 (September 30th – October 6th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 40, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

On October 1st, the tax rate increase went into effect in Japan, and therefore it’s hardly surprising that sales would be down significantly during Week 40. The drops impact all platforms and games, though the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch fared relatively well. Unfortunately, no new release on Nintendo platforms in the Top 10 provided by Famitsu this week.

Here’s how the previously released games fared this week:

  • 01./01. [NSW] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age S – Definitive Edition (Square Enix) – 57.667 / 360.871 (-81%). JRPG always get a big drop during the second week, and this one was no exception. It will reach the 400 000 units milestone within the next two weeks;
  • 03./04. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Nintendo) – 16.430 / 203.580 (-64%). A big drop this week, but not big enough to prevent the game from reaching the 200 000 units milestone!
  • 06./10. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) – 9.840 / 654.285 (-33%). It’s now sold over 650 000 units, and it should reach the 700 000 units milestone in November;
  • 08./11. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 9.252 / 3.288.904 (-30%). Drop below the 10 000 units/week threshold;
  • 09./12. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} (¥5.980) – 8.941 / 2.480.563 (-24%). It will reach the 2.5 million units milestone during Week 42, and 3 million units by the end of the year is definitely possible (though not guaranteed);
  • 10./13. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 8.507 / 954.488 (-27%). The 1 million units milestone is in sight!

Famitsu – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales took a big hit due to the combined effect of the usual post-major release drop and the tax increase on October 1st. But despite that, said sales are up Year on Year by a wide margin: in fact, the console sold nearly twice as many units as last year during the same week!

During Week 40, the Nintendo Switch sold 89 137 units, as opposed to 46 590 units last year (and 196 489 units last week). Quite interestingly, the OG model is once again the most popular with 50 469 units sold, though this time the gap between the two models is smaller since the Lite model sold 38 668 units. The next few weeks and months will allow us to get a better picture about which model is going to be more popular in the long run.

YTD sales have now topped 2.6 million units (2 607 779 units to be precise), which is about 800 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks (1 809 107 units). In the next few weeks, we will get to see whether the gap between this and last year will eventually reach 1 million units or not. Since launch, the Nintendo Switch has now sold 9 497 325 units; it should reach the 10 million units milestone sometime in November.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sold only 1 303 units this week, as opposed to 2 384 units during the previous one. It’s getting dangerously close to 3 digit sales, which is going to become standard in 2020. In comparison, the handheld was still selling 6 376 units last week, which is why the gap between 2019 and 2018 sales just keep growing: 166 893 units this week, and 446 863 units last year after the same amount of weeks. LTD sales now stand at 24 471 857 units.
