[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 20, 2019 (May 13th – May 19th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 18, 2019 in Japan.

Week 20 is the start of a really slow period for video games sles in Japan, and it really shows in the Top 10 Software shared by Famitsu. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would have been back at the top if not for Ys: Memories of Celceta – Kai. It sold 8 507 additional units this week (-16%), bringing total sales to 3 085 499 units.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Minecraft saw a similar drop in sales with 7 258 units (-14%) and 6 954 units (-16%) sold respectively. The usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch were also impacted by the drop in sales, but their sales remain strong enough to stay in the Top 10 Software… it’s not like there’s new releases popular enough to replace them anyway! Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Minecraft have now sold 2 302 993 units and 783 332 units LTD respectively.

Next, let’s take a look at sales of the other games in the Top 10 Software:

• 06./06. [NSW] Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (Pokemon Co.) – 5.991 / 1.530.747 (-2%). Quite interestingly, sales are perfectly flat, though it’s not quite clear why…
• 07./05. [NSW] New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Nintendo) – 5.087 / 616.477 (-30%). Unfortunately, it’s impossible to say whether that drop has anything to do with the proper reveal of Super Mario Maker 2 or not: the following weeks will tell! So far, the game has sold 616 477 units since launch.
• 08./09. [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo) – 4.524 / 3.067.711 (-11%). Slightly better drop than the average this week;
• 09./07. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 4.518 / 1.319.464 (-21%). Nothing special about sales this week;
• 10./08. [NSW] Yoshi’s Crafted World <ACT> (Nintendo) {2019.03.29} (¥5.980) – 4.068 / 134.812 (-27%). Slowly but surely making its way to the 150 000 units milestone.

The Nintendo Switch sold 32 564 units this week, which is slightly better than last year during the same week (about 2 000 units more). As mentioned above, we have now entered a really slow period for the video games market in Japan, and so it’s highly unlikely sales will improve dramatically until the end of June.

The question is how low Nintendo Switch sales will go, and whether 2019 sales will (temporarily of course) drop below 2018 sales. This isn’t likely, as May and June 2018 were definitely not great months for the console in Japan. Of course, this only applies if Nintendo do not make any announcement that could lead to a further increase in sales than normal (new model, price drop, etc.).

So far, the console has sold 1 268 655 units this year alone, which is over 300 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks. It will certainly be interesting to see just how far sales will go before the week the console reached 1 million units sold in 2018. Total sales reached 8 158 201 units this week.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it only sold 2 529 units this week, which is half of what it did last week, and less than half of what it sold last year during the same week (when sales were already not all that great). YTD sales have now topped 114 920 units, and LTD sales 24 419 884 units.
