[Japan] Famitsu sales for CY 2024 (Top 100 Software, Hardware, more)
Famitsu has shared its latest report on video games sales in Japan, covering the Calendar Year 2024 (to be more precise, the period going from January 1st to December 29th, 2024, so 52 weeks in total).
Software
For the first time in many years, not a single SKU managed to sell over 1 million units in 2024 in Japan. Super Mario Party Jamboree did come close with around 950.000 units sold. And despite launching in October, it managed to outsell all other games thanks to exceedingly strong sales during the holiday season (and those strong sales carried over to the New Year).

Hardware
For the 8th year in a row, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in Japan. Sales took another big hit, but still remain above the 3 million units threshold: yet another remarkable feat for such an aging console (soon entering its 8th year on the market!). With the launch of its successor expected for this year, sales are bound to take drop even further in 2025, but should stay at a comfortable level.

Unlike in 2023, the video games market in Japan did not grow in 2024; sales are down to 301.3 billion Yen (only 74.6% of 2023 sales). Hardware sales saw the biggest decrease, as 2024 sales only represent 70.8% of 2023. Both the Nintendo Switch saw a noticeable drop in sales.
Games sales also took a hit: 2024 sales only represent 82.1% of 2023 sales. The lack of million-seller clearly was no coincidence: 2024 truly was a significantly slower year for video games sales!
In total, 2024 sales only account for 74.6% of 2023 sales. Fortunately, with the launch of the highly anticipated successor of the Nintendo Switch, as well as Pokémon Legends Z-A, the video games market should see a nice rebound in 2025!
