[Japan] Famitsu sales for CY 2025 (Top 10 Software, Hardware, more)

Famitsu has shared its latest report on video games sales in Japan, covering the Calendar Year 2025 (to be more precise, the period going from December 30th, 2024 to December 28th, 2025, so 52 weeks in total).

Software

In 2024, not a single game managed to sell over 1 million units at retail alone. But in 2025, there are 2 of them: Mario Kart World and Pokémon Legends: Z-A (with both versions selling over 1 million units each).

As expected, the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 had a noticeable impact on sales, with 4 Nintendo Switch 2 games in the Top 10 Software. But Nintendo Switch games also saw strong and steady sales last year, no doubt helped by back-compatibility.

Mario Kart World was the best-selling game in 2025 in Japan with over 2.6 million units sold. Most of those sales come from the Nintendo Switch 2 bundle, which proved a really popular option for those interested in buying the console.

Combined, the two versions of Pokémon Legends: Z-A came quite close from surpassing Mario Kart World, with over 2.5 million units sold.

Hardware

After 8 years as the uncontested best-selling console in Japan, the Nintendo Switch has finally been dethroned. Its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2, took its crown by selling nearly 3.8 million units during its first 7 months on the market.

Market

As expected, the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 led to a significant increase in sales for the market as a whole. Sales jumped by 418.13 billion Yen (138.8% of 2024 sales), with 282.69 billion Yen for Hardware (149.3% of 2024 sales) and 135.44 billion Yen for Software (121% of 2024 sales).
