The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct #3: final trailer and all the announcements; Nippon Professional Baseball sponsor event in Japan
The 3rd and final Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct was livestreamed yesterday, and as previously announced, it featured the final trailer for the movie. But that’s not all! Several announcements were made regarding the movie, but also the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary.

During the Nintendo Direct, several additional cast members were revealed. They are:
- Donald Glover, who voices Yoshi
- Issa Rae, who voices Honey Queen
- Luis Guzmán, who voices Wart
Also, some new content for the Nintendo Today! app was announced. Starting today, a Super Mario Galaxy Movie hub is available in-app, and offers several features.
First up, here’s the in-theatres features:
- 1) Exclusive digital photo frame (not available in all theatres)
Unlock a commemorative digital photo frame, featuring the date and location where you saw the movie, that you can use when you take a picture with the app at participating theaters.
- 2) Check-In History
Track when and where you watched the movie in the handy Check-In History section of the app.
- 3) Digital wallpapers
Here’s how you can check-in to access the related features:
- 01: Open the “Nintendo Today!” app.
- 02: Tap “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Portal” on the home screen of the app.
- 03: Look for the movie poster at the theater, then tap “Check-In” and follow the onscreen instructions to scan it. (You will need to allow access to your location information and camera on your smart device.)
Next up, digital Collectible Cards are now available in the Nintendo Today! app. Every day you log in, you will get a collectible card. Each one features some extras, such as information about the movie or details about the characters and the games they appear in.
For example, the card for Mario features a selection of games Mario has appeared in, and shows how old you were when said games came out!
The first time you log-in, you will get the same two cards as everyone (001: About The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and 002: Mario), but after that, you will get one random card per day. There’s a total of 40 cards to collect, and you will have until June 10th to try and get them all.

Finally, the Japanese version of the 3rd Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct featured a couple extra announcements:
- Preview Events: there will be some preview events in three cities in Japan (Kyoto, Tokyo, and Osaka), allowing fans to watch the movie before the official release date. However, in order to get a ticket, fans will need to enter a lottery via the Nintendo Today! app. Said lottery is now open until March 17th. More details can be found on the official website.
- Kyoto: March 28th at 7PM
- Tokyo: April 18th and April 19th at 12.30PM and 6.30PM
- Osaka: April 18th and April 19th at 12.30PM and 6.30PM
- Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary: Nintendo is planning to sponsor 12 baseball games by the 12 teams from the Nippon Professional Baseball league.
- During those matches, Mario will throw the ceremonial first patch, and specially-designed bases featuring the iconic ? (Hatena) block will be used for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd bases. It will be the first time in NPB history that an official game will be played with specially-designed bases across all 12 teams!
- After the game, there will be a “base-running experience” event (using the specially-designed bases) for parent-child pairs selected via lottery (note: they will be chosen among those attending the match at the stadium).
- Some exclusive merchandise will also be available for purchase at the venue of each game!
