Japan: more sales data for Week 44 2019, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create – Day 1 Sell-through (Week 45)

This week, we have the Day 1 sell-through for a couple of Nintendo Switch titles (platforms and games are listed from best-selling to worst-selling):

  • [NSW] [PS4] Fortnite: Dark Fire Bundle (Warner Bros.) – 20%. A slow start, but nothing unexpected for a game that’s already available for free on the Nintendo eShop. Here, retailers are clearly looking at long-term sales;
  • [NSW] Eiga Sumikko Gurashi Tobidasu Ehon to Himitsu no Ko Game de Asobou! Ehon no Sekai (Nippon Columbia) – 10%. An usual slow start for such a game.

Dengeki (Week 44)

Dengeki report that Luigi’s Mansion 3 sold 164 000 units during its launch week. The sell-through is a bit low: only 55%, which is due in part to the public holiday on Monday. Retailers simply ordered enough copies in advance, and definitely will not have any trouble selling all the remaining ones.

In comparison, Luigi’s Mansion 2 on Nintendo 3DS sold 285 000 units at launch (and 1.05 million units LTD), with Luigi’s Mansion on GameCube sold 134 000 units at launch (and 412 000 units LTD).

As for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, it’s off to a really disappointing start with only 19 000 units sold. Finally, the Resident Evil Triple Pack sold just “ok”, with 6 000 units in the first few days.

Next, here’s how the other entries in the Top 50 Software fared this week:

  • MODEL DEBUT #nicola (FuRyu): 2 833 units sold. An unsurprisingly poor debut for a game by FuRyu;
  • Disgaea 4 Complete+ (NIS America): about 2 600 units, with 1 600 units on Nintendo Switch. A poor performance, even worse than Disgaea 5 Complete at launch (about 5 000 units sold);
  • Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD (SEGA): 1 323 units sold on Nintendo Switch alone (PlayStation 4 version did not chart). A poor debut for a game quite clearly aimed at a western audience.

This week, Dengeki also share some data about the current Fiscal Year, as of the end of October (April 1st to October 27th). Unfortunately, the market isn’t in the best of shapes:

  • Hardware: 70.7 billion Yen (+7.5%)
  • Software: 65.6 billion Yen (-10.6%)
  • Total: 136.3 billion Yen (-2.1%)

The release of the Nintendo Switch Lite in September led to a massive increase in sales during that month: they were up by 76.6% Year on Year, to 33.9 billion Yen. Unfortunately, during the other months, sales were either slighly up or down compared to last year. Therefore, it’s no wonder the market would be slightly down for the whole Fiscal Year so far.

Naturally, Dengeki expect things to change in November with the release of major titles such as Pokémon Sword and Shield.
