Yooka-Laylee: E3 2016 trailer reveals Q1 2017 release; screenshots

Update

In an interview with MCV UK, Andy Robinson (writer) confirmed that Playtonic Games were developing the Wii U (and PC) versions themselves. However, since they could not possibly develop all versions themselves, it’s Team 17 who is working on the others.

Here’s what he had to say about that:

We naturally have so many backers who opted for Wii U. Because of the size of the team, we couldn’t take on all the consoles. You can imagine from a developer stand-point, that porting from PC to PS4 and Xbox One is slightly more straightforward than porting to Wii U

He also believes that “it feels right” to play Yooka-Laylee on a Nintendo platform, but that the other versions would also be “fantastic”. ForMark Stevenson (Technical art director), it was important that the Wii U version “gets the right attention”, especially the developers are “massive Nintendo fans”.

***Yooka-LayleeE3 2016 starts next week, and several developers/publishers have already started with announcements and/or reveals (in order to avoid all the noise of E3 week). That’s the case of Playtonic Games, who just revealed the E3 2016 trailer for Yooka-Laylee. It gives us a good look at the actual game, showcasing some of the abilities, characters, enemies, and more.

Here it is:

This trailer also reveals what many fans saw coming: Yooka-Laylee will not be released in October 2016 as initially scheduled, but in Q1 2017 instead.

On their official blog, Playtonic Games explain that they felt confident they could ship the game in October, but that they chose to take some extra months to polish the game. After all, they are well aware that their fans value quality and polish above all (and it’s not like they didn’t get used to delays during the RARE era!).

This delay will allow them to deliver a better games to the many fans who supported them during the Kickstarter campaign, but also throughout development.  It’s even more important for them since this well be Playtonic Game’s very first game!

Here’s some screenshots for the game:
