Yo-kai Watch: the first movie was the top grossing domestic film in Japan in 2015

Yo-kai WatchThe first Yo-kai Watch movie, called Yo-kai Watch: Tanjō no Himitsu da Nyan!, came out December 20th 2014 in Japan, and it was extremely successful. It broke several sales records, and started doing so even before it hit theatres (just with pre-purchased tickets). The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan reported last week that the movie was in fact the top grossing domestic film in Japan in 2015.

The movie grossed a total of 7.8 billion Yen (roughly 65 million Yen), which is almost 2 billion Yen more than the movie at #2. The latest Pokémon movie, Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, did quite poorly in comparison: it’s only #12, with 2.61 billion yen (~$22.0 million) grossed.

Of course, you need to take into account the fact that this 18th movie came out in July (and not in December 2014), but ticket sales were still way below the two Yo-kai Watch movies. The movie earned 384,115,100 yen (about $3.09 million) in its first two days, with 351,592 tickets sold. In comparison, the first Yo-kai Watch movie sold 1,484,916 tickets for 1,628,893,000 yen (about US$13.53 million) during its opening week-end.
