Terraria: more details about the Wii U / 3DS versions, 3DS trailer, screenshots

Last week, 505 Games finally confirmed that Terraria was indeed coming to the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. Following this announcement, one of the developers posted a message on the official forums, in order to give more details about those two versions of the game. First, we have the name of the two studios doing the porting:

– Wii U: Engine Software
– Nintendo 3DS: Codeglue

Terraria505 Games confirms that Terraria for Nintendo 3DS will work on the regular Nintendo 3DS, and that it will not be a New Nintendo 3DS exclusive. Of course, there will be some optimisations (regarding the controls, mainly, due to the additional buttons), but nothing that will prevent cross play between consoles. Unfortunately, the game will not be compatible with Download Play, which means that each player will need their own copy of the game for the multiplayer.

Talking about multiplayer, here’s some details about it:

– Wii U: 1 to 8 players online (with friends). 1-4 players in local co-op with splitscreen, and Wii Remotes. Player 1 can play only on the GamePad, which means Player 2 can have the TV screen all for themselves. There will also be online leaderboards and message sharing via Miiverse.
– Nintendo 3DS: local multiplayer only.

The Wii U version can be played with the following controllers:

– Wii U GamePad;
– Wii U Pro Controller;
– Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

On Nintendo 3DS, the bottom screen will be used for inventory/accessory management, but also for displaying the map, sculpting and more. And good news for Nintendo 3DS users: this version of the game will not be a port of the mobile version. In fact, the developers are planning to take full advantage of the strengths of the platform, such as the second screen and the control (unfortunately, the Circle Pad Pro will not be supported).

As for Terraria on Wii U, it’s based on the console version, but with everything the second screen has to offer. Cherry on top of the cake: 505 Games is planning to keep the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions up to date… in fact, the first post launch updates are already specced out! In other words: Wii U and Nintendo 3DS should not be left behind when it comes to additional content.

Unfortunately, 505 Games wasn’t able to confirm whether the Plumber and Hero outfits would get their “original” colours on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS: for that, the company would first need to get approval from Nintendo.

Finally, 505 Games also confirms that the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of Terraria will not impact the development of updates for the other versions of the game (since two studios are doing the porting, not 505 Games themselves).

Here’s a trailer for the Nintendo 3DS version of Terraria:
