Super Mario Maker: overview video, Wii U bundles for Japan, JP website updated, more

Overview video

This morning, Nintendo uploaded the usual overview video for Super Mario Maker (a bit earlier than usual!), which showcases the main elements of the game:

Official website (Japan)

Today, Nintendo updated the official website for Super Mario Maker in Japan: click here to access it! There isn’t anything particularly new in there, but it’s still possible to find some interesting tidbits about the game.

The website does confirm what was announced at E3: there is a total of 99 costumes to unlock in the game, and there’s two ways to do so. The first one: scanning amiibo (pretty much all of them are compatible, including some of the Animal Crossing amiibo cards!). The second one: completing the 100 Mario Challenge. In other words: you don’t need to buy anything to unlock the costumes… but you’ll have to earn them if you don’t buy an amiibo!

By the way, the game also featured a 10 Mario challenge, where you have to go through 8 levels with only 10 lives.

Here’s various screencaps from the website:

Technical details

If you’re planning to get Super Mario Maker via the Nintendo eShop (directly, via a download card or a download code), you will need 1.4GB of free space on your Wii U or external HDD + 80MB per save file (one per Wii U user), which will allow you to stock up to 120 courses. Unsurprisingly, Super Mario Maker can only be played in Single Player, and is compatible with the following controllers:

– Wii U GamePad (required)
– Wii Remote
– Wii U Pro Controller
– Classic Controller

As for online features, there’s only two of them:

– you can share and download levels with other players;
– you can post Miiverse comments once you’ve cleared a level.

Finally, the following amiibo can be used:

– Mario (30th Anniversary): make Mario become super powerful, adds a CRT visual effect, gives mustaches to all enemies, and more;
– Most amiibo: unlock their costume in-game, which also change Mario’s abilities.

NB: amiibo can only be used in the Super Mario Bros. style.
