Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – Details on the Costume Pack DLC

Yesterday, WayForward posted the latest Kickstarter update for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, which is about the Costume DLC Pack. We don’t know when it will be released exactly, but according to the developers, it “will be Ret-2-Go in just a few weeks”!

Despite the name, the Costume Pack DLC isn’t just about costumes! Indeed, it contains 3 brand new adventures featuring three special versions of Shantae. They’re basically stand-alone modes, with a full “what-if” story line, but also new moves, voices, and character artwork!

Ninja Mode

Shantae decides to become a become a Ninja Master – but first she must undergo intense training! Speed, Stealth, Self-control! She must learn the way of the ninja to defeat her greatest foe.

In this mode, Shantae can move at super speed, wall jump, teleport, throw kunair and throwing stars at enemies, but she cannot transform. She can collect Gems to power up her moves, and go search for new Dream Squid locations. If you get them all, you will unlock Ninja-themed win screen images.

Beach Mode

Shantae finally takes a day off, and her heart is set on finding the “Very Best Beach” in all of Sequin Land! However, rival sunbathers, competitive shell collectors, and other “shallow” minded foes get between Shantae and her fun day in the sun.

In this mode, Shantae can attack using her ponytail, but also a bouncing Beach Ball (perfect to hit distant targets). Her iconic Dancing is replaced by a bubble move, which allows her to float through the air… just be careful and avoid popping it, because otherwise, she will just plummet to the ground. Finally, when in water, Shantae can move at high speed.

Unfortunately, there’s a big catch: in this mode, Shantae is weak to the sun, and if you stay under it for too long, she will begin to heat up and take Burn Damage after a while. To cool her off, you can collect sunscreen (conveniently placed around the levels), or jump into water. This mode allows you unlock new win screens.

Officer Mode

A special cross-over with the Mighty Switch Force series, that allows Shantae to don Patricia Wagon’s very own uniform. In this mode she has to re-capture the escaped Space Hooligans. You don’t have to capture them all to clear a stage, but if you want to unlock the special win screens, you will have to get them all AND get the best times.

She can use the Siren Helmet to “Switch Up” solid blocks, in order to solve puzzle and navigate around… just be careful not to get smashed again the screen in the process! Also, her ponytail attack is replaced by an upgradable Pellet Gun.

The Costume Pack DLC will be released “soon”, but if you’re a Kickstarter Backer, you will get a Download Code for it “well before it goes public”. In fact, WayForward have already requested codes to platform holders: their goal is to make sure Backers can get their codes first, though it’s possible there will be delays.

Here’s some pictures for the DLC:
