Sayonara! BoxBoy! – Details, overview video, footage, file size, demos, pre-load, screens, more

Today, Nintendo updated the official website for Sayonara! BoxBoy!, which will be released in a couple of weeks in Japan (on February 2nd). Said website reveals various details about the game itself, and provides some gameplay clips, and more. There’s even the usual overview video for you to check out!

Let’s start right away with that video:

Sayonara! BoxBoy! – New elements

The front page of the website introduces some of the new elements to be found in this third BoxBoy! game:

  • Box-Rocket: special boxes that can shot up in the air;
  • Box-Bomb: special boxes that can explode and destroy nearby elements (including harmful elements, such as spikes);
  • Box-Warp: special boxes that allow you to warp to the spot of the last box;
  • Remote-Box: special boxes that can be controlled at a distance;
  • Box-Bit: little “children” boxes that you need to safely guide through levels;
  • Wind areas: areas where the wind is strong, pushing you back/forward;
  • Water: in some areas, water can be found. You have to use your blocks to navigate through those;
  • Scales: pretty self explanatory (if not, the footage below will make it clear!);
  • Gravity: in some areas, gravity is flipped.

Here’s some gameplay clips showcasing all those new elements:

Sayonara! BoxBoy! – Costumes

Just like in the previous entries, collecting all the crowns in the levels allows you to earn in-game currency, which can be used to buy extras such as tips and tricks books, but also additional costumes. Sayonara! BoxBoy! will feature costumes from the first two games, but also some brand new ones.

Sayonara! BoxBoy! – Story + stages

In Sayonara! BoxBoy!, Qbby and his friends hop onboard the Boxship (Hakoship) in order to travel through the galaxy, and save the planets that fell to a mysterious black smoke. The screenshots below show that those planets are a lot more colourful than Qbby’s home planet is!

Overall, Sayonara! BoxBoy! features 22 different worlds, and 150 levels, to be found on three planets. There’s also a special set of 40 challenge stages, that you need to buy in the in-game shop using… the in-game currency.

Challenges includes:

  • completing levels without throwing a single block;
  • collecting all the crowns;
  • completing levels without jumping even once.

If you get stuck in levels, there’s three ways you can get help:

  • you can always go back to an earlier point in a level, if you’ve messed up. If you want to restart from the beginning (because you missed a crown, for example), you can always restart from the very beginning. Whatever you chose to do, you will not get penalised!
  • you can use Play Coins to display some hints;
  • you can ask for help via Miiverse, using the button on the bottom screen.

Sayonara! BoxBoy! – Story + stages

As announced a few weeks ago, a Qbby amiibo will launch alongside the game in Japan. Naturally, that means the game is compatible with amiibo, but not just this particular figure! Here’s the list of compatible, and what they do:

  • Qbby amiibo: unlock a GameBoy filter;
  • Kirby: unlocks a Kirby costume;
  • King Dedede: unlocks a King Dedede costume;
  • Waddle Dee: unlocks a Waddle Dee costume;
  • Meta Knight: unlocks a Meta Knight costume.
