Media Create sales for Week 2, 2016 (Jan 11 – 17) [Top 50]

During Week 2, several games came out in Japan, but only one of them is for a Nintendo platform. It’s Card Fight!! Vanguard G: Stride to Victory!!, on Nintendo 3DS, which had a pretty average debut with 20 992 units sold during the first few days. That’s 40-60% of all units sent to retailers, according to Famitsu. Unfortunately, it’s pretty likely the game will disappear from the Top 20 before the end of the month.

If you don’t take into account the new entries (and there isn’t that many of them, as there’s three SKUs for a single game after all), Week 2 was pretty calm overall. Sales are down for pretty much all games, which is pretty normal for January (not really the best month for video games sales). Obviously, some titles fare better than others, such as Monster Hunter X and its 36 700 units sold this week.

Since Week 2 was a pretty calm week overall, it’s not surprising to find many holidays titles still in the Top 20. There’s Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ at #12 with 6 546 units sold, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer at #15 with 5 305 units, and more. Of course, most of them will keep on selling steadily during the next few months, such as Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, or even Yo-kai Watch Busters, which are bound to stay in the Top 20 for a bit longer.

Finally, we have Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros., which sold an additional 4 408 units this week. Unfortunately, without the holidays to support its sales, it’s inevitably going to drop from the Top 20 pretty soon (most likely next week). Also, retailers still haven’t sold all units sent by Nintendo for launch, and some of them have already started cutting its price.

Hardware-wise, both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS are down. For the Nintendo 3DS, sales are still pretty good: 42 372 units were sold, which is very slightly worse than last year (about 2 000 units less). This must be a pretty satisfying result for Nintendo, who is still not quite ready to reveal its next handheld (let alone release it). Now it remains to be seen how long Nintendo 3DS sales will manage to hold at the same level as last year.

As for the Wii U, it sold 15 398 units during Week 2, which is also a pretty decent result. After all, last year, Nintendo’s console sold only 8 894 units during the same week. In other words, thanks to Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, the Wii U is selling twice as well as in 2014. Another thing to check out in the upcoming months is how long Wii U sales will manage to remain well above its 2014 sales.
