Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn: release date announced, more details and pictures

Today, out of the blue, Nintendo announced that Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn (most likely its very last Nintendo 3DS game) will be released on March 7th in Japan, and March 8th in Europe and North America. It’s now available for pre-purchase on the Nintendo eShop in Japan, where it costs 5 378 Yen, and requires 11 652 blocks / 1 456MB of free space.

Nintendo also shared some more details about the game, starting with special items that give Kirby Copy Ability-likes powers known as Ravel Abilities. Here’s the 6 powers found in the game (Japanese names):

  • amiibo: allows you to attack enemies using giant balls of yarn;
  • Harigane: allows Kirby to don a helmet and wield a sword made of wire, so that he can slash enemies;
  • Button: allows Kirby to use button-shaped bombs;
  • Nylon: allows Kirby to use wind to jump higher, and automatically attract beads;
  • Bobbin: allows Kirby to use a bobbin-shaped yo-yo;
  • Dress Pin: allows Kirby to throw pins.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn was a relatively easy game, and so this Nintendo 3DS version introduces a Hard mode called “Devilish Mode” (playable in all stages). In this mode, you’re being chased by “Devil” enemies, and you actually lose health if you get hit by enemies. Each “Devil” behaves differently.

The game also features two Sub Games featuring King Dedede and Meta Knight (Japanese names):

  • Dedede de Dododo: you control a giant Dedede, and have to go through the various levels;
  • Meta Knight Slash: go through levels as Meta Knight, slashing enemies along the way.

And in case you were wondering whether the game will be compatible with amiibo, the answer is yes! By tapping one of the compatible figures, you can get a special hat for Kirby, which grants him a special power. You can tap an amiibo (and therefore get the powers) as many times as you want: there’s no restrictions, for once!

The compatible amiibo are as follows:

  • Kirby
  • Waddle Dee
  • King Dedede
  • Meta Knight

NB: all variants are compatible (Super Smash Bros. series, Kirby series, etc.).

Finally, Nintendo reveals that you will be able to decorate Kirby’s apartment with treasure found in the levels. There’s special furniture you can only get by playing Devil Mode or one of the Sub Games, as well as trading via StreetPass.
