Japan: more sales data for Week 51 2017, holiday season, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 51, Holiday season (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 51, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 1 761 000 units, which is 146.14% of Week 50 sales. As for Hardware sales, they topped 432 000 units (123.15% of Week 50 sales). Both saw a major increase, which was expected for what was basically the biggest week of the year for video game sales.

Media Create also share some data for the holiday season (December 11th to December 24th), and the results are hardly surprising to anyone who has been paying attention to the market this year. Software sales during that period were down to 2 967 million units (88.70% of sales during the same period, last year), while Hardware sales rose to 784 000 units (130.32% of sales during the same period last year).

The increase for Hardware is quite obviously due to the Nintendo Switch, which more than compensates for the drop in Nintendo 3DS and other platforms sales… and that’s despite the console being heavily supply constrained. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Software, due to a lackluster line-up from third-party publishers. Yes, Nintendo games sold pretty well, but the same cannot be said of third-party titles…

During the holiday season, the Nintendo 3DS was the most popular platform Software-wise, with 1 278 000 units sold (40% market share). Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch also did well with 1 076 000 units sold, and 9 games in the Top 20 (selling about 914 000 units): that’s more than the Nintendo 3DS, that only managed to put 6 titles in the Top 20 (selling about 880 000 units).

While that may seem contradictory (the console with less games in the Top 20 sold almost as much Software as the one with more), it’s obviously due to the large number of games available on Nintendo 3DS. Meanwhile, the library is still pretty limited on Nintendo Switch, which is not surprising for a first year (especially with such lukewarm support from third-party publishers).

During the past two weeks, the Nintendo Switch sold no less than 491 000 units, which is 60% of total Hardware sales during that period. The Nintendo Switch led the market, as other platforms all saw a drop in sales compared to the same period last year. Also, with over 3 million units, the console is poised to outsell its ill-fated predecessor pretty soon (in fact, by the time you’re reading this, it already has!).

Week 51 (Dengeki)

This week, Super Mario Odyssey sold about 200 000 units: that’s roughly 70 000 units more than the previous week, bringing the total since launch to over 1.26 million units. Splatoon also saw a big increase in sales, with 151 000 units sold: that’s about 2.1 times what it sold during Week 50. Total sales since launch have now topped 1 700 000 units… the 2 million units milestone isn’t too far now!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 103 000 units this week, bringing the total since launch to 1 075 000 units, allowing it to become the third million-seller on Nintendo Switch.

As for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon, it sold 214 000 units this week (all versions combined), bringing the total to 2 027 000 units since launch. It managed to reach the 2 million units milestone in 6 weeks, which is a fairly good for a mere third version (and not a full sequel, like Pokémon Black 2 and White 2).

Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 also performed relatively well, with 199 000 units sold this week, and 395 000 units since launch. Unsurprisingly, sales of Nintendo 3DS increased during Week 51, the biggest week of the year for video games sales.

Here’s some more sales data for Week 51:

  • Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings: 37 000 units for all platforms, 6 684 units for the Nintendo Switch version;
  • Medabots Classics: 11 760 units sold.

Hardware-wise, the momentum of the Nintendo Switch is still going, with 269 000 units sold this week: that’s 22.8% more than during Week 50. Since launch, the console has sold over 3.18 million units, reaching the 3 million units milestones in 43 weeks. It’s less than the Wii during the same amount of weeks (it had already sold 3 610 000 units by then), but it’s much more than the Wii U and its 770 000 units sold.

Dengeki point out that the Nintendo Switch gained momentum with the release of Splatoon 2, and that momentum got boost with the release of Super Mario Odyssey. Right now, the console is selling at near-Wii levels, and it will be interesting to see how it fares during the last week of 2017 and the first one of 2018.
