Japan: more sales data for Week 48 2017, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 48 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 48, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 692 000 units, which is 112.89% of Week 47 sales. Sales of new releases (204 000 units in total) were enough to compensate for the drop in sales for previously released titles (-65 000 units), and so, overall Software sales are up this week.

However, that increase only applies to week on week sales. If you compared Week 48 sales with those of the same week last year, you will find that they amount to only 48.14% of those. The reason? Final Fantasy XV, which came out during Week 48 2016, making a direct comparison a bit unfair for Week 48 2017.

The main new release of the week was Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which ended up selling almost 98 000 units. That’s more than Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U (86 000 units at launch) and Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii (83 000 units at launch). But even though it managed to become the best-selling entry at launch, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was not able to reach 100 000 units… it wasn’t that far from reaching that threshold, at least!

Media Create believe that the upcoming DLC for the game will help sustain sales beyond the launch period. It will certainly be interesting to see if they are right or not! In comparison, the first Xenoblade Chronicles ended up selling 163 442 units LTD (NB: Famitsu data), which means 50% of its sales took place beyond launch week.

If a similar ratio was applied to Xenoblade Chronicles 2, it would end up with 200 000 units sold LTD, which would be a pretty respectable result.

Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)

Here’s the Day 1 sell-through for a few games on Nintendo platforms:

    • [PS4] [NSW] L.A. Noire (Take-Two Interactive Japan) – 30%. The PlayStation 4 sold more, but the Nintendo Switch had a better sell-through (most likely due to lower expectations from retailers);
    • [NSW] Sumikko Gurashi: Sumikko Park e Youkoso (Nippon Columbia) – 20%. A decent debut for a game expected to sell well on the long run.

Week 48 (Dengeki)

Quite interestingly, all 3 trackers (Media Create, Famitsu, and Dengeki) reported unusually similar sales for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Dengeki reported the lowest number, but the difference with the other two trackers is neglibile. According to them, the game sold about 96 897 units at launch, with a sell-through ratio of 70%.

Just like Media Create, Dengeki point out that it’s a better opening than previous entries in the series:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii): 71 000 units at launch, 149 000 units LTD
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U): 86 000 units at launch, 130 000 units LTD

Next: Super Mario Odyssey. Dengeki reports that it sold 59 000 units this week, bringing the total to 844 000 units. They also expect the game to top 1 million units before the end of the year, given the current sales trajectory.

As for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, they sold…

  • Pokémon Ultra Sun: 52 933 units this week, 489 036 units since launch
  • Pokémon Ultra Moon: 51 522 units this week, 486 085 units since launch
  • Dual-pack: 15 067 units this week (30 134 units if counted as two units), and 294 167 units since launch (588 334 units if counted two units)
  • Total: 1 269 288 units (1 563 455 units if dual-pack counted as two units).

In other words, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon topped 1.5 million units sold at retail within the first three weeks, which is a pretty good result for a third entry. It looks like it should easily be able to top 2 million units this very year.

Other releases this week include:

  • Kirby: Battle Royale on Nintendo 3DS, with 24 767 units sold
  • Attack on Titan 2 ~Mirai no Zahyou~ on Nintendo 3DS, with 9 506 units sold
  • Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi, with 31 000 units sold on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch (5 400 units for the latter)

Finally, sales increased for Splatoon 2, with 38 000 units sold this week (1 434 000 units since launch). Same for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 23 000 units sold this week and 892 000 units since launch.

Dengeki also report that the market as a whole is up for the first 8 months of the current Fiscal Year:

  • Software: 113.8 billion Yen (+7%)
  • Hardware: 106.9 billion Yen (+ 65.9%)
  • Total: 220.7 billion Yen (+30%)

Naturally, the Nintendo Switch is the one driving the market, with 54.7 billion Yen in sales (51.2% of sales) for Hardware, and 27.4 billion Yen in sales (24.1%) for Software. In total, the console generated no less than 82.1 billion Yen, which is 37.2% of total sales during the first 8 months of the current Fiscal Year. Naturally, Dengeki expect the Nintendo Switch’s momentum to keep going in December and beyond.
