Japan: more sales data for Week 39, Fire Emblem Warriors (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 39 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 39, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 533 000 units, which is 148.08% of Week 38 sales. Sales of both new and previously released games increased, but the former saw the largest increase (235.78% of Week 38 sales, no less!).

Day-1 sell-through (Media Create)

This week, we have the sell-through for only one game:

•  [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions <RPG> (Nintendo) (¥4.980) – 30%. A slow-ish debut, but sales should pick up during the week-end.

Week 39 (Dengeki)

This week, Dengeki note that FIFA 18 saw a better debut than its predecessor, with 66 000 units sold for all platforms combined (as opposed to 59 000 units for FIFA 17). However, this time around, there was a new platform: the Nintendo Switch, where it sold over 13 000 units (siphoning sales from the PlayStation 3 version).

As for Fire Emblem Warriors, they report about 60 000 units sold for both versions combined, with 39 000 units on Nintendo Switch and 20 000 units for the New Nintendo 3DS version. The sell-through ratio is a tad too low: only 50%, which means that Koei-Tecmo shipped about 120 000 units of the game for launch week. It’s definitely going to take retailers a few weeks to sell the remaining units, probably with the help of a price drop.

Unfortunately, Dengeki do not provide sell-through ratio for each version separately, and the 50% we just mentioned is for both versions combined. However, there’s no doubt more units were shipped on Nintendo Switch, we simply don’t know how many exactly.

Just like Famitsu (check out this post), Dengeki shared some data for the first half of the current Fiscal Year (March 27th to October 1st, so one more week than Famitsu). During that period, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age sold more than 3 million units, and Splatoon 2 quickly became a million-seller.

The market saw an increase in sales for both Software and Hardware sales (compared to the same period, last year):

• Hardware: 2.89 million units (+63.1%) / 75.56 billion Yen (+71.1%)
• Software: 13 360 000 units (+8.2%) / 82.4 billion Yen (+12.7%)

The Nintendo Switch sold 1 210 000 units, and the Nintendo 3DS sold 800 000 units (+25.1%), including 380 000 units for the Nintendo 2DS family. As expected, the launch of the New Nintendo 2DS XL had a really positive impact on sales, and without it, the Nintendo 3DS would be down by a wide margin Year on Year.

The irony is, the Nintendo 3DS did see a drop in sales… but only for Software. 4.9 million units were sold, and that’s -8.1% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch is off to a great start with 3.12 million units sold.

Dengeki note that, for the first time in 10 years, the video game market in Japan finally saw an increase in sales during the first half of the current Fiscal Year. The market had been down every year since the peak in Fiscal Year 2007, with 317.6 billion Yen. 2017 is still way below that peak, but we’re finally seeing some growth again!
